In American colloquial English, the word “conflict” has come to be used almost exclusively to convey a negative experience or encounter such as a war, battle, fight, or other dispute. Current conflicts in 2016 include the United States’ wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the presidential election, and Black Lives Matter vs. municipal police departments. However, one of the definitions of the word “conflict” includes a “mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands” (Full definition of conflict, n.d.). It is very important for managers at all levels to respond quickly and effectively to conflict within their workplace as the longer the conflict exists, the more damage it causes. For personal conflicts, the organization should have a published procedure for filing grievances:
Let employees at all levels of your organization know that their voices will always be heard, and respond promptly and reasonably to employees’ issues. This can prevent bad feelings from festering and growing into resentment and bitterness. Conflict is best handled quickly and openly. (Ingram, n.d.)
Should a conflict between two people not be resolved quickly, the resentment and bitterness mentioned by Ingram could spread to become rivalries between co-workers, groups, and entire departments; and as any conflict grows unchecked, the consequences for the organization before a point of ultimate resolution grow as well.
