American Behemoth At times growing like a cancer across the planet and at other times, acting as a swift military force, America is the world's greatest superpower. Small States are of the past and have no future. The modern movement is all toward the concentration of people and territory into great nations and large dominions. The great nations are rapidly absorbing for their future expansion and their present defence all the waste places of the earth…. As one of the great nations of the world, the United States must not fall out of the line of march. -Senator Henry Cabot Whether it be its cultural, economic or military, America's influence can be felt in every corner of the world. As the founding fathers penned the constitution they envisioned a young country growing into an empire . From presidential policy to presidential underhandedness, Imperialism can be seen in every administration. It has been justified as in the name of democracy and as necessary to the economy. Whatever face may be given to it, imperialism has always been a part of the American way. Lewis and Clark Expedition One of the earliest examples of American imperialism can be seen in the Lewis and Clark expedition. These all- American heroes set out on an expedition to explore the recently acquired Louisiana Purchase in 1803. During this three year expedition Meriwether Lewis and William Clark studied the flora and fauna, discovered resources and mapped out one of America's largest purchases ever. But as these two men explored the Mississippi, they did far more than explore on behalf of Thomas Jefferson. McDonald's has over 300,000 individual restaurants in one hundred countries. What does this mean? Local culture is slowly phased out by American ways. According to a study in 1996, 85% of global teenagers watch MTV. Nike shoes and Gap jeans are sold all across the world, but ironically aren't made in the United States. The McDonald's arches are said to be “more recognizable that the Christian cross”. The World's largest television conglomerate CNN can be subscribed to in over 150 million households and 212 countries. Started from rebel colonies seeking independence, America has grown into a global superpower. Its military might and influence are matched only by its global cultural influence. From presidential imperial policy to corporate dominance, American imperialism is as prevalent today as it ever has been.
