In American History I, there have been multiple videos shown containing information that we have been learning each class period. Each video has its own meaning, information, time period, as well as its own message. The videos that were shown are all very meaningful and withhold valuable information on the history within this country. These films have a huge impact on our country, as well as on us, improving our knowledge on history. The video that specifically caught my attention the most was the Journey through Slavery film. While watching this video I have obtained so much knowledge that has enlightened me in many ways. Of course this video’s main topic is on slavery, and the things that went on in the country throughout the slave era. I have learned what African American slaves had to go through when they were forcefully brought to the United States. This video focuses on slaves in our very own state of Virginia and the things that they dealt with. Slaves in Virginia were treated horrendously by their masters, having to pick cotton in any kind of weather, being beaten with long forceful whips, and dying from many diseases that spread. Slavery is one of America’s biggest regrets. Treating a human with the same beating heart as a low, worthless piece of trash only because of skin color is a fact that will forever remain in our country’s history. Those marked as slaves were sold, tortured, demoralized, raped and killed. After the Emancipation in which slavery was illegalized, many would think that the horrors were over and that America as a whole started a new leaf. Unfortunately, the man of the South, refusing to move forward tried to keep the colored man down as best they could. Their premeditated plans and actions to find an excuse to continue torturing and killing the Negro man continued for years, which are documented in “A Red Record”. This story captures the grueling events African Americans were put through and the unfairness of the times. By capturing and sharing this history it will make sure these mistakes can never be repeated again .

Over the years most of us have read a great deal about the institution of slavery and it’s effects on this country and the African American race as a whole. The fact of the matter is most of us have only learned certain information about slavery. There are only certain facts and historical figures that we lean about. No to say that the information we get is wrong, but we were not taught the whole story. This could be due to the approach of different instructors or because school curriculums are supposed to focus on the interesting facts and stories about slavery. The fact of the matter is there are some areas that go untouched when learning about slavery in most schools. Reading the book Black Southerners was something different for me. It was like some one opened a door and when I entered in I found hidden facts and knowledge about an institution that has a tremendous effect on my country and this history of race.
The Native Americans were promised a large amount of private land for their families to live on forever in peace. As time went on throughout the years, Native Americans started to see their land shrink by acres. This was unsettling to many of the Natives and would start to raise problems with the white soldiers. By having the Promised Land taken away from them it would only start to add fuel to the fire before the Indians would attack back. Taking of land was of several items that would start to enrage the Indians. The next item that I took away from class was how the U.S. would continuously steal from the Native people and made it evident in the video. The U.S. would continually steal Native American money for their benefit. This would not help the Indians moving forward in trying to provide a life for their family. U.S. agents would withhold Native Americans money that was given to them from their federal government. It was the payment for the land that U.S. bought from them. The United States (US) would continue to make numerous treaty violations by having to make Natives make payments to Indian agents who would use the money for what they want. With all of this occurring, it caused an increased number of families to stricken of hunger and adds to the never-ending hardship among the Dakota tribes in Minnesota. From the beginning of the chapter one Douglass mentioned his separation from his origin, from his parents, therefore he did not ‘know’ himself. He was kept from the knowledge of his position in society. In first paragraph of chapter one, I noticed more than eight rhetorical expressions of negative views- “I have no,” “I could not,” “seldom,” “never” etc. These statements shows his big gap of his deprivation of knowledge. The young Douglass lived in the society neither a human nor an animal. Thus whites prevented him to build his own “self” and dehumanized him. W.E.B. DuBois introduces the idea of “Double-consciousnes”, he admits, “this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that’s looks on in amused contempt and pity.”(…) Douglass always fought with his inner feelings, and struggled to combine his inner self with his outer self. He always wanted to change his position. In the second half of the book he tried to grab the power of knowledge, and his position changed. He focused on literacy and language and became a teacher. He started to write and read and started to connect his intellectual mind with his speech and action. It was his first turning point, and this attempt awakening his mind. Slowly he was breaking the invisible wall around him, and tried to find the path to build his identity. Thus the second half of the book, in his journey his searching knowledge made him to say, “ I used to speak,”(77) “I told him,”(56) “I would tell them,” (57). “I said” etc. His masters started to hear Douglass’ voice who used to play a role of silent audience.
As a struggling country, America’s south discovered slavery as a way to gain financial stability. Except, slavery grew into much more than a need for money. It became a social thing and also a controversial topic among politicians, especially with the emergence of abolitionism. Even after slavery, it became a great learning opportunity to ensure that it never happens again.
Since the beginning of slavery in the America, Africans have been deemed inferior to the whites whom exploited the Atlantic slave trade. Africans were exported and shipped in droves to the Americas for the sole purpose of enriching the lives of other races with slave labor. These Africans were sold like livestock and forced into a life of servitude once they became the “property” of others. As the United States expanded westward, the desire to cultivate new land increased the need for more slaves. The treatment of slaves was dependent upon the region because different crops required differing needs for cultivation. Slaves in the Cotton South, concluded traveler Frederick Law Olmsted, worked “much harder and more unremittingly” than those in the tobacco regions.1 Since the birth of America and throughout its expansion, African Americans have been fighting an uphill battle to achieve freedom and some semblance of equality. While African Americans were confronted with their inferior status during the domestic slave trade, when performing their tasks, and even after they were set free, they still made great strides in their quest for equality during the nineteenth century.
Slavery has plagued Africa and its people for a few thousand years. Slavery or involuntary human servitude was practiced across Africa and much of the world from ancient times to the modern era. Slavery mainly took place within the country but later turned into a huge trading export. The Middle Passage was a trade that started with the Europeans kidnapping African Americans to sell them in North America, The Caribbean, and South America mostly Brazil. The African Americans were forced to travel chained for months in a slave ships, most slaves were sold, but other slaves preferred death over being enslaved. The Middle Passage was a horrendous act were millions of slaves died, and were sold, but The Middle Passage was necessary for the developing of The United states during slavery time. Over ten million slaves were sold.
David M. Oshinsky’s book “Worse Than Slavery” brings to life the reality that faced slaves after the abolishment of slavery. It recounts the lives that these men faced daily and it made me question the humanity of all those who were involved and question how as a society we let this ever happen. From the convicts being leased out to people who didn’t care about their well-being to a life back on a state ran plantation, where life was worse than it was for them as slaves. It showed just how unfair the justice system was for a black prisoner compared to a white prisoner. Their lives were worthless and replaceable and only mattered when they were thought to be worth something to someone.
Then the video placed itself back to when Lincoln was presdent of the united states. The narrator talked about how Lincoln did not want the war to be about freeing slaves but , for the war to be about saving the union. During this times the balcks thought that linciln was fighting for them and all they wanted was to have rights. These rights consisted of land , education, ablity to vote ,, but mosting importantly was alnd they believe if theey owned land they were free. In South Carolina blacks had built their own schools, churches and communitys , on the land that they were given during the war. When Andrew Jackson was eleceted into office he did not like the idea fro blacks have their own land. So Andrew Jackson orderd Oliver O Howard a Christian general to remove the black people off the land they had made their homes. Oliver Howard called ammeting at the town hall and some were around 2,000 people attended.
The driving question in this project is, “How can the choice of individuals cause revolutions?”. This project needed to include a news segment about a certain event in the revolutionary war, everyone had to have a role in the video, and it needed to have a script before hand. The video needed to be 1-2 minutes long, and had to be as realistic as possible. As time progressed slavery changed, because it went from indentured servitude to racial slavery. In the eighteenth century, this went even further because before, society used to include slave labor, but it had changed and become focused on slave labor.
