Abstract
Jeffrey Bezos is the Chief Executive Officer of Amazon.com. The CEO of all companies is the top manager that a board of directors votes for to run the corporation. (Business Essentials, 2005, p. 525)
I buy movies and television shows from Amazon.com all the time and download them onto my computer. For example, my favorite television show is Prison Break and sometimes I miss an episode. If this happens than I can just go to Amazon.com and purchase any episode I want as long as it has already aired. This is very convenient since the full season of any television series is not sold in stores until every episode of the entire season has aired on television. Most television series cost only $1.99 per episode which is a very good deal. After they are fully downloaded onto my computer I can burn the episode(s) onto a DVD and watch them anywhere.
Since I buy products from this company so often and I just heard about them not too long ago, I thought that it would be interesting to find out some more information about Amazon.com and how Jeffrey Bezos has been so successful in running the company as the Chief Executive Officer.

Jeffrey Preston Bezos was born on January 12th, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bezos always loved school especially anything to do with science and computers. When Bezos lived with his parents and went to school he built a laboratory in his parent's garage so he could experiment with various science projects. After high school, Bezos attended Princeton University with a goal to achieve a degree in physics. Later on he decided that he was more interested in computers and he graduated with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering. (Wikipedia, 2007, pg 1)
Jeffrey Bezos is the founder, chief executive officer, president, and the chairman of the board of Amazon.com. (Wikipedia, 2007, pg 1) Straight out of college, Bezos went to work on Wall Street. He worked in the computer science field building a network for international trade for a start-up company called Fitel. (Achievement, 2005, pg 1) After two years at Fitel the company failed to succeed so Bezos went on to work for Bankers Trust where he developed software applications for pension-fund clients. Taking the e-commerce market by storm, Amazon.com was founded in 1994 (Amazon.com). Bringing the company to life was Princeton engineering graduate Jeff Bezos. He first thought of the idea to create Amazon.com when he was simply searcing the internet. He first worked as an investment banker D.E. Shaw & Co. where he was looking for investment opportunities for the company. surprisingly, he found that the internet was growing over 2,000 percent per month (“Jeff Bezos the King of E-Commerce”). He saw this as a massive opportunity and decided to start Amazon.com to first sell books. Jeff Bezo’s began Amazon in his garage in July 1995 with three Sun workstations setting on wooden doors for tables and extension cords running from everywhere (Academy of Achievement, 2010). Right from the beginning he was a visionary leaving his well paying job as a senior vice president with D. E. Shaw to begin Amazon.com (Academy of Achievement, 2010). Being the visionary that he is he saw an opportunity prompted by the huge growth rate of internet use in a single year and ran with it never looking back. Jeff realized that the internet had “no real commerce to speak of” so he began researching possible businesses (Academy of Achievement, 2010). “After reviewing 20 mail order businesses and deciding which could be conducted more efficiently over the internet than by traditional means he decided on books” (Academy of Achievement, 2010). He thought books were perfect because attempting to send huge catalogs for all the available books would be expensive and cumbersome, but an online resource database that was easy to navigate would provide customers with easy access and a single point from which to shop. “In 30 days, with no press, Amazon had sold books in all 50 states and 45 foreign countries, obviously by the success of Amazon he was right (Academy of Achievement, 2010). In a case study written by Javad Kargar called “Amazon.com in 2003” he stated that “Amazon's online store was a big hit, with about $5 million in the first year of operations” (2004). This huge success so quickly would have confirmed for Jeff that his idea was viable and drove him to continue to strive for more. Customer service is paramount at Amazon and Bezos consistently reminds employees that their focus needs to consider the impact and feeling of the consumer. He is known to be an outside the box thinking daring to be bold and go against the norm. Utilizing drones to reduce delivery times while minimizing costs display Bezos focus on customers and stakeholders (Amazon Prime Air, n.d.). Bezos is a task-oriented transactional leader, who Brad Stone in his book “The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon”, described Bezos as a micromanager who does not value the opinion of his employees (Stone, 2013). These individuals excel in achieving goals and positive outcomes but need improvement in human relations. Bezos tends to be bold and brash and not warm and fuzzy, and empathy is a critical component to others buying into your vision (Schwartz, 2015). He often becomes frustrated at his employees and berates them publicly; an unusual approach for an individual who built an amazing company. A company built on fear and stress looks beautiful from the outside but internally could quickly collapse if Bezos does not address his communications approach. Amazon.com is an On-line retailer of, originally, books. The company was established as a micro enterprise in the US in 1994. Since then it has enjoyed rapid expansion in all aspects of its operations, including business turnover, and a spectacular rise in share value since public floatation in 1997. New on-line sites based in Germany and UK and a distribution centre in Amsterdam were established in 1998 to cater for European markets. On August 30, 2000 Amzon.com launched its third site outside the US, Amazon.fr in France. Amazon.com sells only on-line and is essentially an information broker. It holds a relatively small, though increasing, inventory and outsources most aspects of its operations (but not IT). The key to its operation is to offer value added and sophisticated customised services, a continuously expanding catalogue of products in terms of both quantity and range, and deep discounts. Another part of Amazon’s retail strategy is to serve as the channel for other retailers to sell their products and take a percentage of cut of every purchase. Amazon does not have to maintain inventory on slower-selling products. This strategy has made Amazon a ‘long tail’ leading retailer, expanding its available selection without a corresponding increase in overhead costs.
When Amazon.com first began in 1995, as strictly a book retailer, Bezos knew he had discovered an excellent company. After all, a physical bookstore cannot stock anywhere close to the number of books Amazon can offer online. Within a year, the company had a customer base of approximately 340,000 consumers and daily site visits were huge as well. But Bezos wanted to expand the company to offer music and DVDs, because he realized there was little or no barrier of entry. In the next years Amazon would emerge as a marketplace, expanding the company globally offering products from toys to kitchenware. Because of the relatively cheap prices Amazon was offering and also the growing number of online shoppers, the company was doing tremendous amounts of sales and creating profits.
