“Alzheimer 's disease is a brain disease in which damaged and dying brain cells cause mental deterioration over a period of time” (“Alzheimer’s Disease,” 2015). This disease has affected millions of families all across the world, and it is a disease where patients become worse as time goes on. The cause of Alzheimer’s seems to be the buildup of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, while some cases are also linked to genetics (“Alzheimer’s Disease,” 2015). These changes in the brain alter the personality and behavior of the individual. These changes make it difficult to care of a patient with Alzheimer’s, but there are certain qualities one needs to have in order to work with someone who has this disease. There is still a lot about this disease that is unknown, but scientists have found some treatments that supposedly help (“Alzheimer’s Disease,” 2010). Since there is no cure, researchers are constantly trying to find more and more about the disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a very hard disease to deal with for anyone involved, but researchers are doing their best to find a cure for this awful disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that has behaviors that go along with it. In this disease, the orderly system of the brain becomes damaged and no longer works properly. “The brains of Alzheimer 's disease victims appear shrunken, particularly in large parts of the neocortex, the outer layer of gray matter responsible for higher brain functions such as thought and memory” (“Alzheimer’s Disease,” 2015). It usually begins with minor memory loss of recent events. This memory loss is slowly joined with forgetfulness, cluelessness of hygiene, impaired judgement, and loss of concentration. As the disease progresses, patients get worse and worse until death. This disease is caused by a buildup of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, which do not let the brain function properly. Genetics are also thought to play a role (Whitehouse, 2016). All of these changes in the brain are linked to the personality and behavior changes that happen within a patient. Since there is no real cure, correct care for an Alzheimer’s patient is crucial in order to keep them the best they can be. There are some known treatments, but scientists are constantly trying to figure out more about this mysterious disease. Due to all the changes a person must undergo, Alzheimer’s disease is a very traumatic for both the patient and the family.

In the final stages, they lose bladder and bowel control and have difficulty with swallowing, frequently leaving them malnourished and dehydrated.
