When one thinks of formative education throughout early-to-middle childhood and/or adolescence, they likely imagine large, plain, institutional buildings built of commercial blocks, colored with off-white paint and filled with staggering lines of children of many different age groups. One might imagine a public school’s playground, with large-paneled gates enclosing the perimeter around a main building or communal water fountains and bathrooms measured equidistantly between corridors of classrooms which line the halls. He or she might envision rows and rows of lockers lining each hallway- neatly packing and compartmentalizing each student’s books, bags, and tools with which to build their own academic successes.

According to statistics and data collected by the National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI), the five most common reasons parents choose to home school are as follows: 1) there is more opportunity to customize and individualize curriculum as well as the learning environment for optimal learning conditions, 2) the home is widely considered to be more safe than public and private schools, 3) specific cultural/religious values and beliefs may be encouraged and incorporated into education, 4) home schooling promotes enhanced familial relationships and bonding, and 5) home schooled children in North America have averaged scores 15 to 30 percentile points higher than public school students (NHERI).
