In Brooklyn - New York, in 1899, Alphonse Capone was born. Johnny Torrio, a bootlegger in Chicago, recruited him when he was at the age of 22. Torrio was one of the many people who had established his business after the passing of the National Prohibition Act in 1920. Capone's job was to persuade proprietors to buy Torrio's illegal alcohol.
Within three years Capone had taken over Johnny Torrio's business and controlled 161 illegal drinking establishments. In an attempt to expand his business, Capone developed the policy of killing his competitors. After the killing of “Don O'Banion” in 1926, gang-warfare broke out in Chicago. There were 130 gangsters murdered in just one district of the city in just on year. This included the famous St Valentine's Day Massacre when six leading members of the “Bugs Moran” gang were executed in a garage by gangsters dressed in police uniforms.
Few of the murderers were arrested and convicted of their crimes. Gangsters like Capone were able to use their money to bribe and payoff police investigators or intimidate potential witnesses. The police were also in chains by the refusal of any gangster to testify against another gangster.
It is said that by the year 1929, Capone's income from the other aspects of his business was $60,000,000 from illegal alcohol, $25,000,000 from gambling establishments, $10,000,000 (vice) and $10,000,000 from other rackets. It is thought and said that Capone 600 gangsters working for him to protect this business from rival gangs that could kill him.
Capone publicly admitted how he had gained his fortune. He said that he makes his money by supplying a public demand. If he breaks the law, his customers who number hundreds of the best people in Chicago, are as guilty as he is. The only difference is that he sells and they buy. Everyone calls him a racketeer, he calls himself a businessman."

After being suspended for his violence, he never officially furthered his education. He began his life of crime by joining the kid gangs that existed all over Brooklyn. These “gangs” were nothing more than children being hoodlums and participating in petty crimes, although they would be the ...
He strived to create a military image for himself and this was achieved through his conquest of Britain. He personally led his Roman armies to land in Britain, despite his physical disabilities. This act gained him popularity and support from the military. He reorganised the names of the auxiliary troops, and he also changed their terms of service, and made it so that any auxiliary soldier was entitled to Roman citizenship. Claudius gained support from the military and strived to also gain the support of the Julian’s. He did this by publicly announcing Augustus as his role model and also by executing Caligula’s assassin. This did gain him the support of the Julian’s but it also made the Praetorian Guard angry. The Praetorian Guard were the Roman troops whose job it is to protect the Roman emperors. They were upset that Claudius executed Caligula’s assassin without consulting them first. However, Claudius was able to buy back their loyalty and support by providing the Guard with a generous bonus of 15 000 - 20 000 sesterces. By doing this he established a precedent. However, although Claudius had the support of many, but he struggled to gain the support of the Senate. ...s. Was Capone fully to blame for the violence that plagued his life? Or was he adapting to the times in which he lived? Maybe he was a man who believed in self-defense in a cruel time where he was just as likely to be killed by an opposing bootlegger. In several interviews, he spoke of peace. He asked for peace from other men that challenged him. Some might even call him generous. Whatever Al Capone was, there was one type of person that he believed to be truely evil. In the words of Capone, "There's one thing worse than a crook, I think...and that's a crooked man in a big political job. A man who pretends he is enforcing the law and is really making dough by breaking it. Even a self-respecting hoodlum hasn't any use for that kind of fella..he buys them like he'd buy any other article necessary to his trade. But he hates them in his heart," (Blumenthal 102).
He came up from almost nothing in a poor immigrant home of Italian decent. His mother and father were working class citizens. Capone began using the Italian heritage at a young age with a slight twist of dastardly aggressiveness. He was successful in making money. Prohibition alcohol, gambling, prostitution, speakeasy’s, and hits were just a few tactics of his reign in Chicago during the roaring twenties. With his attitude and ability to practically decide who will win elections made him so fearful, and if you ever crossed him you were due to payment for ticking him off. Valentine’s Day and the small-thug are just two examples of the raw decisions of Capone to commit murder. There is no possible answer to the amount of killings Capone is responsible for. The federal government became involved in the case, and a man by the name of Eliot Ness pioneered the way. Unable to be bribed like an ordinary official, Ness secured “indictments against Capone and sixty-eight confederates, citing 5,000 offences,” although alcohol was not involved in any of them (Cyriax, “The Untouchables”). During his time investigating Capone, it was documented that Capone was so frustrated by his inability to bribe the man that Capone raged and shouted that he would kill Ness himself, however, the mob boss was unable to accomplish this, and the prideful man was reduced to a sitting duck, as his sales declined and he could feel the Feds coming closer and closer (Cyriax, “The Untouchables”).
Al Capone, America’s most prominent Mafia figure in the 1920’s, also known as “Scarface” for a scar running down his left cheek. Capone didn’t hide in the shadows like most figures in such a shady occupation. He didn’t shy away from the camera, more like he welcomed it, and aimed to be seen by the public as a respectable businessman and a pillar of the community. Surprisingly, Capone wasn’t from a distinctly poor community, his father earned a living as a barber. Capone was introduced to the gang life by a friend and from there it all went downhill and into the life of a gangster.
Throughout his thirteen years as emperor of Rome, Claudius was part of many major events. One event that caused a major upheaval was the uncovering of a conspiracy to kill Claudius. At this time a war broke out. Thirty-five senators died, along with three hundred equestrians. This event caused the senate to despise Claudius even more than they already did. Next, Claudius reconstructed the Port of Ostia. This made travel and trade easier and quicker for the Romans. Finally, he imported much needed corn to help feed the hungry citizens, earning their

In the roaring twenties, the life of organized crimes was at its peak. What was the greatest mob hit ever pulled off in history? Well I'll tell you. It all happened on Valentines Day, the morning of February 14th, 1929. This incident was call, "The St. Valentines Day Massacre". The man behind this infamous crime was none other than, the infamous Al "Scarface" Capone. Al Capone was the all time greatest mobster of all time. The idea of organized crime fascinates me in so many ways. Capone was the only person to have pulled off such a crime. Al Capone was top gangster in Chicago and was one of the greatest members of the Italian Mafia and George "Bugs" Moran was the leader of the Irish/German mafia and he was the main target behind this hit. He targeted Capone because Al Capones had a bounty on his head, $60,000,000, and found George Moran as a threat. George was Capone's biggest threat of all. He needed to take him out quickly. (Al Capone, True Crime Story). Writing this paper will let me learn a lot more about this massacre. There is one question I would like answered, "Why hadn't Moran's crew made an attempt to fight back?" (Al Capone, True Crime Story). Moran's men had a long history of being violent with others. This is one question that we will never know. My most used source on this essay will be internet information and a book. I feel these sources will give me the most amount of information. Using a magazine will too but it was very hard to find a 20's magazine article.
