Plato Story "The Allegory of the cave" had many common ideas between the two stories "Learning to Read and Write" By Fredrick Douglas and "The Lonely, Good company of Books" by Richard Rodriguez , the few common ideas were how education was eye opening after it was obtained, the idea to understand, and ones perspective of life.

Throughout Plato 's story "The Allegory of the cave" men are stuck in this cave with their backs turned away from the light, until one day a man turns towards the light and learns for himself what the light is about. The man than explores and begins to educate himself on everything and anything, he then tries to take everything he has learned back down to the cave to get his fellow cave members to step out and learn what the light is all about. The metaphor that Plato 's places in this story is how the cave is represents the human mind and the light represents the understanding of life …show more content…

This same idea appears in Fredrick Douglas story. When Fredrick Douglas started to understand what he was reading around him, his mind stared creating his very own opinions and feelings. As well the same idea comes to surface in Richard Rodriquez story when he starts to understand the underlying theme in all of the books he has ever read and applied to himself as a person. When both writers began to truly be able to understand anything and everything, they both started to find what their every purpose was in life, and understand the person that they were.

The last idea that Plato connects to these two writers is about ones perspective of life. Throughout "Learning to Read and Write" Fredrick Douglas see everything from a slaves perspective. Instead of being handed an education he has to work hard for it, so he grows to appreciated education much more than the ones that didn’t have to work for it. As well he starts to feel that being able to read and write is more of a curse for him than anyone else
