How did Tim Burton convey growing up in Alice In Wonderland? Alice In Wonderland is a fantasy based movie conveying the transition from childhood to adulthood that was made in 2010 by director Tim Burton. This movie is about a 19-year-old girl called Alice that falls down a rabbit hole while in a stressful situation about her future life and finds herself in Underland (Wonderland). While Alice is in Underland she is set on a path to slay the Jabberwocky (a dragon like creature) that is controlled by the Red Queen. By Alice slaying the Jabberwocky the throne will go back to the rightful queen, the White Queen. Along the way she experiences physical changes, difficult situation and realization of reality. By using editing techniques it allows the film to add flashbacks which shows an action or dream that has happened in the past that in on a character's mind at that current moment. This allows the viewer of the movies to gain back story and insight on that character. For example, when Alice flashes back to when she was a young girl in Underland painting roses with the Red Queen and playing with the other characters in Underland. Also by using cross cutting between different sections of the film creates suspense between scenes and shows linkages between characters, themes and/or plots. Alice’s mind is shown growing up as she becomes braver and more confident with the unusual events that come across her path. This is shown when Alice grabbed the vorpal sword and rides off on the bandersnatch to the White Queen's castle, then the film flips back to the Red Queen castle with the Red Queen yelling at her assistant/ lover, then flips back to the White Queen's castle with Alice and her making a substance to allow Alice to get back to her normal size. A somewhat right-wing and didactic critique at Decent Films writes, “Alice embodies the gender feminist narrative of vibrant young girls losing their mojo as they come of age in patriarchal society.” The woman’s magazine, Jezebel, while praising the movie as “refreshingly feminist” seemed to notice only that the hero who fights against the forces of evil is a woman. Jezebel mentions other characters, but does not take the time to catalogue their relationship to feminism. In an Associated Content piece by Adriana Tanese-Nogueria which does, commendably, explore the feminist theme much more richly than many other reviews, still, the main focus is on Alice’s journey of feminist liberation. But Lewis Carroll also takes a look at the men in this story. Men during the Victorian era were known to have the control over the household and have a job. Their lives were around getting the perfect wife and making a lot of money. So when one reads some of the characters in Alice in Wonderland, one can see some difference in how he portrays some of the characters.

Alice then attempts to explore Wonderland analytically and becomes more independent as the outcome. Whereas, there are a few key turning points where it is possible to see how Alice is changing, something that is visible throughout her journey.
