Alcohol Abuse Among College Students
A survey done by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), “showed that 60% of full-time college students aged 18–22 reported current alcohol use and 39% were classified as “binge drinkers”” (McBride et al 370). A tremendous amount of students drink alcohol and it causes problems, some more serious than others, like driving under the influence (DUI), car accidents, bodily harm, or even death. Plenty of people can be blamed for college drinking but a numerous amount of them do not do anything to control the abuse of alcohol. After much research, it is clear that the people responsible for alcohol abuse among college students are the students themselves, the sellers of alcohol, and the advertisement companies.

A helpful article states, “All of these consequences (from drinking alcohol) not only affect the individual, but also other college students, families, the college itself, and the community” (McBride et al 370). College students who consume alcohol are not only affecting themselves but others as well and according to Nicole McBride, are considered a “...public health concern”. However, many students are pressured into drinking by peers, fraternities, and sororities. According to Clyde Barrow and Pat Breslin, “...two of three mem...

...ey are responsible for their own actions, including how much alcohol they consume. The people who sell the alcohol have a responsibility to check IDs and make sure that it is not getting into the wrong hands. Moreover, advertisement companies do not correctly portray the use of alcohol and that has a big effect on who and how it is abused. Often, people say that college administrations are responsible but students are in control of their own actions so the administrations are not to be blame. To help fix the problem of alcohol abuse, students should learn to be more responsible, sellers should check IDs for everyone, and advertisement companies should show the drawbacks of alcohol abuse along with colleges showing students programs like D.A.R.E. If people take action and do what they can, there is a big chance that people can stop alcohol abuse among college students.
