The Alamo was the place of a climactic battle in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico. In the early 1800s, Texas was part of Mexico. The United States' annexed Texas in 1845, resulting in war with Mexico. The US Army was mostly comprised of frontiersmen and some of the most colorful figures in our history to San Antonio, and like the armies before them, they occupied the Alamo. The later battle of the Alamo is one of the most famous battles that took place on American soil. For many Americans and most Texans, the battle of the Alamo was a symbol of patriotic sacrifice.
History
The Alamo originally served as a church for the Mission San Antonio de Valero, founded in the year 1718. The church served as a central point to convert the local Indians to Christianity. Several armies throughout its history occupied the mission. The last army garrison to call the Mission San Antonio home was the 200 defenders of the Alamo that would fall to the Mexican Army in a massacre.
The Alamo was militarily vital because it blocked one of two entrances into Texas from Mexico. James Clinton Neill the original commander of the Alamo was placed in command of the mostly volunteer garrison defending the Alamo. James Clinton Neill had previous artillery experience and had a regular army commission thus making him the best choice for command. A major problem facing the Alamo was its lack of supplies and reinforcements. These would eventually cause the Alamo to fall to Santa Anna and the Mexican Army. Due to his lack of supplies and reinforcements, Neill wrote to General Sam Houston in which he stated: “Unless we are reinforced and victual led, we must become an easy prey to the enemy, in case of attack.”1 In December 1835, General Sam H...

The third lesson from the battle of the Alamo is to never leave any equipment that can aid the enemy. The defenders of the Alamo failed to disable the cannons inside their perimeter and they were used against them with devastating effect. The last lesson that can be taken away from the battle of the Alamo is that the world is always watching. Even in the days before the internet, word of atrocities will get out. In the case of the Alamo, General Santa Anna’s atrocities became a rallying cry for Texas and eventually lead to General Santa Anna’s defeat and Texas independence from Mexico. The men of the Alamo had perished but as one historian put it, “their spirits had only begun to live and inspire.”10
The mission was established initially in 1690 as Mission San Francisco de los Tejas in East Texas. The mission was abandoned and moved to the West Bank of the San Antonio River and was called Mission San Francisco de la Espada in 1731. Its purpose was to serve the Coahuiltecan tribes and educate them in religion.

This book by Otis A. Singletary deals with different aspects of the Mexican war. It is a compelling description and concise history of the first successful offensive war in United States military history. The work examines two countries that were unprepared for war. The political intrigues and quarrels in appointing the military commanders, as well as the military operations of the war, are presented and analyzed in detail. The author also analyzes the role that the Mexican War played in bringing on the U.S. Civil War.
Later they wanted to annex it but Mexico said that any attempts to annex Texas would be an act of war. The Mexican War started in 1846, when Mexicans attacked a group of United States soldiers, under the command of Zachary Taylor, in a disputed zone on the border of United States and Mexico, killing about a dozen American soldiers. President Polk told the U.S. Congress that the “cup of forbearance has been exhausted” which means the Mexicans hit the last straw and it is time for war. President Polk sent General Zachary Taylor to Nueces River vs. Rio Grande to poke the Mexicans to shoot and they did. The Mexicans have shed “American blood upon American soil.” The United States wanted war with Mexico now they have a reason to declare war ( History.com
San Antonio, Texas-- The Battle of the Alamo, a battle in San Antonio, against the Mexicans broke out, marks the most important of the battles so far during the Texas fight for independence. The battle began on February 23, 1836 and ended two days ago on March 6, 1836, lasting for 13 days. General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, leader of the Mexican force, planned to seize the fort with an army of thousands. Unprepared, the Texans had an army of around 200 men, including well- known congressman David Crockett and James Bowie and not so well-known William Barret Travis.
The Battle of Palo alto was the start to one of the most reminisced wars in the United States known as the Mexican American War. This battle took place north of the Rio Grande River near Brownsville, Texas, on May 8, 1846. During this time the United States was flourishing and expanding Westward in hopes to achieve the perspective of manifest destiny. The Battle of Palo Alto was an American victory achieved through the effective use of artillery by General Zachary Taylor, who ultimately inaugurated the full acquisition of Texas.
the land and yet it had such a weak economy and could use the money
For almost fifty years, from 1827 to 1876, seven constitutions were adopted and implemented for Taxes and each one has its set of laws and contained specific ways, aimed at correcting the deficiencies and drawbacks of the previously adopted order. The Constitution of 1876 is the sixth one, which set the rules and laws for Texas government since the state has achieved its independence from Mexico in 1836. The constitution established the principles of Texas Democratic Government and specified the laws, which were applied to the three branches of government: legislative, juridical and executive.
When looking at the vast lands of Texas after the Civil War, many different people came to the lands in search for new opportunities and new wealth. Many were lured by the large area that Texas occupied for they wanted to become ranchers and cattle herders, of which there was great need for due to the large population of cows and horses. In this essay there are three different people with three different goals in the adventures on the frontier lands of Texas in its earliest days. Here we have a woman's story as she travels from Austin to Fort Davis as we see the first impressions of West Texas. Secondly, there is a very young African American who is trying his hand at being a horse rancher, which he learned from his father. Lastly we have a Mexican cowboy who tries to fight his way at being a ranch hand of a large ranching outfit.
The huge dispute about immigration and slavery in 1820’s at Texas foreshadowed an upcoming war between U.S and Mexico. In the beginning the Mexican government allowed American immigration to Texas. They also turned the other way when Americans brought slaves in order to help grow cotton. But when tension grew the Mexican government prohibited slavery, raised taxes, and stopped American immigration. Because Americans thought it was the United States’ manifest destiny to expand west they decided to venture across Texas anyway, resulting in a fight at the Alamo which led to a lot of Texans dying. When Sam Huston and his newly trained army defeated Santa Anna’s army in 18 minutes and captured Santa Anna, they forced him to sign over Texas in exchange for his life. Only to have the compromise disregarded by the Mexican government.
In 1845 the U.S attempted to Annex Texas. Basically America wanted Texas to become one of the states rather then and independent nation by itself. At this time Texas was an independent nation that was not a part of America or Mexico. Mexico wanted to keep Texas neutral if not a part of its own country. When the U.S attempted to annex Texas Mexico became outraged, " In November 1843 Mexico had warned that if the United States should commit the 'unheard-of aggression' of seizing an integral part of 'Mexican territory' Mexico would declare war " (Bound for the Rio Grande, 62). Despite the warning the U.S attempted to annex Texas. In doing so Mexico retaliated by breaking off all diplomatic relations with the U.S. Mexico felt that the U.S was insulting them by not taking them seriously when they threatened with war. So at this point America showed a very large interest in possessing Texas. America was very close to actually acquiring Texas when they made their first mistake in the war.
The Annexation of Texas was one of the most debatable events in the history of the United States. This paper argues the different opinions about doing the annexation of Texas or not. In this case Henry Clay and John L. O’Sullivan had completely opposite opinions about this issue. The reasons of why not do it was because of the desire to prevent war, for division over slavery, and for constitutional rights. On the other hand, John L. O’ Sullivan wanted to do this because of his idea of Manifest Destiny. By 1845, the annexation of Texas went into effect.
Texas prides itself on a strong heritage and history. Events that happened when Texas fought to gain independence will forever remain preserved and idolized in the heart of every true Texan. One of the most famous events that occurred during the fight for independence happened at a place that was not well-known and did not hold much importance at the time, but because of the events that occurred there, it will forever be a place of remembrance and pride. This place is known as The Alamo. This paper focuses on the articles written by Brian C. Baur, Richard R. Flores, and Paul Andrew Hutton over The Alamo.
for revolution. The American Settlers were tired of Mexican dictatorship and wanted the same freedoms they enjoyed back in America. So with a little bit more influence from America a revolt was formed. Eventually Texas would capture Santa Anna the Mexican
The first mission built in Texas was Corpus Christi de la Ysleta. This mission was built in 1682 and built east of today's El Paso. Because it was out in the mountains and basins region of Texas, the weather must have been very harsh. Priests at this mission had been escaping from an Indian uprising in New Mexico. This mission was the first permanent European settlement built in Texas. Around this time La Salle's fort had also been built.
