Air Quality and Atmospheric Chemistry Air is an important aspect of our lives that allows us to live on the planet Earth. Without air, we could not survive. As humans, we rely on air to survive, so the quality of our air should also be important to us. “Adults breathe in about 10-20 cubic meters of air every day. That is about twenty-thousand breaths. Children breathe almost twice that amount…” (B.C. Air Quality). Air has so much to do with the health and survival of many living organisms on this planet. It is important to know the chemistry concepts behind air quality, what affects air quality in the environment, but more importantly, how air quality can be improved to make the planet a much more greener place for the future generations. Air is a mixture of many different gases. The main gases in our air are nitrogen and oxygen. The gases that exist in our atmosphere that are less than two percent would be argon, carbon dioxide, …show more content…
We have two different types of air quality. First, we have the “good air quality” which is where our air is clean and unpolluted. Clean air is important to humans, animals, vegetation, water, and soil. The other type of air quality is “poor air quality,” which refers to a high concentration of air pollutants existing in our atmosphere. These air pollutants can affect living organisms and our environment (B.C. Air Quality). We often refer poor air quality as air pollution. Air pollution is often referred to being gaseous contaminants. There are seven types of gaseous pollutants: sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, hydrogen sulfide, particulates, and hydrogen fluoride. Another word for these gases are primary pollutants. “These gases are created by power plants, smelters, industrial boilers, and manufacturing facilities” (Air Pollutants, Types and
There are six common pollutants in the air, which include ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and lead. These pollutants led to many different symptoms across the United States. Ozone pollution leads to impaired respiratory system. Particulate matter affects respiratory systems, causes cancer, and premature death. Carbon monoxide affects the bloodstream and reduces oxygen to the body’s organs. Nitrogen oxide causes influenza. Sulfur dioxide effects respiratory illness and pulmonary defenses. Lead causes effects in the liver,
When we think of air pollution we think of the refineries in our cities and the exhaust coming from our cars mostly. In reality there are many more pollutants that we don't think about every day. The six most common air pollutants are; “Carbon monoxide, Nitrogen oxides, Sulphur oxides, Particulate matter, Volatile organic compounds, and Ground-level ozone (nitrogen oxide and Volatile organic compounds reaction)”(David Suzuki Foundation). The fact is people are dying from air pollution and we are doing nothing to make it better, in fact air pollution is getting worse.
In an era of rising technology and increasing population, demands on the environment are continually being pushed to new levels. As a result, it becomes important for us to expand our knowledge about the environment and take appropriate actions to protect this element of most importance to human existence. One component of our environment experiencing some of the greatest abuse due to humans is the air. Air pollution has been on the rise ever since the beginning of industrialization. The climbing number of factories and use of cars worldwide are the major culprits of this environmental hazard. There are various gases released into the air that can be considered air pollutants, but one of the most prevalent and dangerous to the environment is carbon dioxide (CO2). Up to 95% of the CO2 produced is the result of natural processes (Burnett & Matthews Jr., 1998). The rest is a direct result of human activity, primarily through the burning of fossil fuels in the production of energy
It reduces human life expectancy by more than eight months on average and by more than two years in the most polluted cities and regions” (Doc C). Air pollution is one of the virtual problems nowadays. Air pollution is mainly caused by cars. One of the most common pollutants is smog. Smog is a dark or opaque fog which is formed by the dust and smoke particles causing condensation of water vapors.
The topic I chose is Air Pollution. New York City is greatly affected by air pollution since it is such a major environmental threat. This environmental threat contributes to approximately six percent of annual deaths and some studies even show air pollution to be a cause of strokes. Although it is difficult to improve the quality of New York’s air due to the air pollutants that come from millions of sources, it is important that this problem stays under control for the health of the people. Found in the Administrative Code of the City of New York, are the detailed collection of the codified local laws of New York City. This code organizes
Air pollution is known to affect human and animal life. Plants are also affected indirectly as air pollution is known to cause acid rain, an even deeper detriment to plant life than most. Lung related diseases are among the most important features that the world have come
Atmosphere: the envelope of gases surrounding the Earth. It is roughly 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, with traces of other gases and plays a major role in the water cycle, the nitrogen cycle, and the carbon cycle.
One of the most dangerous environment issues Southern California is facing today is air pollution. This includes the burning of fossil fuels and natural disasters. Los Angeles is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and the most polluted city in the United States. I will research information about the causes, the effects, and the history of air pollution in the Los Angeles. For my research, I have relied mostly on, the school’s database and library, as well as current events.
Air pollution is caused by many things such as car fumes, burning of fossil fuels,
There are many kinds of air pollution. The ones I want to talk about are the ozone, acid rain, carbon monoxide and toxic air contaminants. Ozone is formed when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide react in sunlight. Therefore, ozone is at its peak during hot summer days. Exposure to high levels of ozone can have serious consequences on your health. It can cause respiratory disease, loss of pulmonary elasticity, and premature aging of our lungs. Next, is acid rain, which occurs in the atmosphere in the form of sulfur and nitrogen oxide. These pollutants can have serious damaging affects on aquatic, forest and wildlife ecosystems, as well as deterioration of buildings. Carbon monoxide is another form of pollution. It reduces the blood?s ability to carry oxygen. If a human is exposed to higher levels, it can cause chest pains, angina attacks or even death.
Pollution is one of the problem touching the African continent all in the name of existence. In defining pollution I can say it is the introduction of pollutants into the natural environment that causes an adverse change. Because of pollution African individuals are fronting lots of difficulties in their lives, troubles such as sicknesses. There are many types of pollution i.e.: air, land and water pollution. In explaining the above mentioned types of pollution, air pollution is the detoxification of our air by unsafe elements such as carbon monoxide and random particles. Water pollution, it can be well-defined as any chemical, physical or biological change in the excellence of water that has a dangerous consequence on any breathing thing
Air pollution according to the Wikipedia << is the introduction of particulates, biological materials, or other harmful materials into the Earth’s atmosphere, possibly causing disease, death to humans, damage to other living organisms such as food crops, or the natural or built environment>>. Therefore, human being should be aware of the facts that the environment and all living creatures are dying. They need to understand the importance of natural items, the nature, etc…
Air pollution is a type of pollution that can severely damage our environment as well as the earth’s atmosphere. Air pollution occurs all the time when the air contains many substances ...
The quality of the air that we breathe, has always been important matter. No matter what season it is, the air that we breathe is, essentially, what keeps us alive.
Air pollution is when a poisonous or harmful substance is released into the air. There are many forms of pollution but air is one of them, it only occurs when dust, harmful gases or smoke enters into the atmosphere and makes it hard for species like plants, animals and humans to live in a difficult situation because of the dirty air. Air Pollution is classified in two sections, invisible air pollution and visible air pollution.. Hence any substance that makes it difficult for the living things that need the atmosphere is air pollution. Humans have been undergoing air pollution ever since the industrial revolution.
