After December 17th, 1903 when the Wrights’ Flyer took its first flight in Kitty Hawk North Carolina aviation technology rose at an expedited rate. Inventors including Glenn Curtiss who created ailerons continued to make to use of planes more practical by increasing their speed, control, and range. Even though future usage of aviation seems indispensable in war both the US army and navy remained reluctant to fund further innovation of planes. In the US aviation research remained largely privately funding and quickly fell behind European countries which provided substantial military funding. This changed however when the US decided to enter World War I in April 6th, 1917. In fact legislators appropriated $13.28 million to the army and $3.5 million to the navy to catch up in military aeronautics that was falling dangerously behind other nations. This still proved to be an under funding department in contrast to the planes, pilots, and necessary resources the allied and axis nations had amassed.[2] Many, who still questioned the practicality of air power in war found this to be a worthless effort as they believed planes would have little to no effect on the war. However this turned out to be quite untrue aviation played a significant role in the outcome of the war. Bombing and reconnaissance missions usage in conjunction were able to effectively locate high priority targets and destroy them often with little resistance. Reconnaissance missions also immensely helped the infantry whether it be through locating target artillery or spotting enemy movements well before previously possible.

With damaging a dozen of an already fairly small fleet due to it being a new technology. The evidence behind these points were often taken from primary documents such as. Lt. W. R. Read’s personal account of recon missions from Other evidence was taken from personal well qualified in the subject such as author Charles J. Gross and Del C. Kostka a staff officer at the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency in St. Louis, Missouri. Lastly evidence was taken directly from the military’s historical division a very trust worth source. Aviation played a very significant role in the outcome of World War One. Without its increasing use as the war waged on the world would be a very different place today.
