The University of Iowa prides itself on being a community with the best interest of the students at heart. With that being said, air pollution is a problem that has been overlooked and ignored within the community due to its inability to directly be seen by individuals. It is impossible to look overhead and notice the carbon dioxide emissions being forced into the air by every student here on campus. Air pollution is an indirect impact from human actions such as driving, construction, and smoking. Each of these factors play a role in the University’s overall impact on the environment; furthermore, each different factor has its own solution that can feasibly be implemented to significantly improve our earth and own community. If there is an excessive amount of air pollution, it can cause coughing, gasping or irritation. Also, damages to the body, including cancer, can result from prolonged exposure to pollutants. (“Health & Environmental Effects of Air Pollution”). Air pollution can have harmful effects on the environment such as the destruction of the ozone layer. The stratosphere, which includes the ozone layer, shields the Earth from detrimental UV rays. This layer is being destroyed by chemicals found in coolants, pesticides, and aerosol propellants. As a result, UV rays can reach the Earth easier. This could potentially lead to more health problems and damages to susceptible crops (“Health & Environmental Effects of Air Pollution”). Acid rain, created by air pollution, can also affect crops by making the soil acidic and water to become inhabitable for wildlife. Another issue that arises with air pollution is global warming. The atmosphere contains greenhouse gases that are responsible for keeping steady temperatures and the sun’s heat on Earth (“Health & Environmental Effects of Air Pollution”). By burning fossil fuels, humans have been releasing greenhouse gases. The conveyance of the greenhouse gases lead to global warming. Los Angeles is one such city that has had some success in controlling its air pollution, with plans that are different from the ones Phoenix is using. Located in the Sunbelt, LA sees a lot of sunshine like Phoenix. It, too, has had a large population growth like Phoenix and has had to respond to that accordingly. Los Angeles has developed a few excellent plans to fight its air pollution, which I believe can also make a difference in Phoenix as well. I propose that we integrate those plans from Los Angeles to enhance the battle of air pollution in Phoenix.

Pollution is a major problem for all of us. People need to recognize this situation so we can start making a difference to this problem. In order to start making a difference, the federal government should increase gasoline tax by one dollar a gallon. Fifty percent of this dollar will go towards public transportation, since passenger cars and trucks are a major contribution towards air pollution, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, E.P.A (10/4, http://www.epa.gov/autoemissions/emsns.html). Due to the expected increase after this is put forth, the remaining fifty percent of the dollar will go towards safety on these transits. When public transportation increases, air pollution will decrease, which will lessen the harmful health risks towards the environment.

One of the most dangerous environment issues Southern California is facing today is air pollution. This includes the burning of fossil fuels and natural disasters. Los Angeles is one of the most polluted cities in the world, and the most polluted city in the United States. I will research information about the causes, the effects, and the history of air pollution in the Los Angeles. For my research, I have relied mostly on, the school’s database and library, as well as current events.
Although air pollution is not really thought of to be a big contributing factor to declining health, according to Medical Doctor, Harry Heimann, it can be one of the biggest killers. We do not see air pollution, so we are not inclined to think much of it, but it can be extremely harmful. Certain illnesses are air-borne and of course we acquire the ever-present aerosols and gases that greatly poison the air we depend on, and not only that, but can help aid in the spread of these harmful agents (Heimann). Not only can air pollution affect the general population, but it can have a disastrous effect on those with asthma or other allergic diseases. An estimated twenty-five million people in the United States alone suffer from asthma, which accounts for approximately forty percent of the United States population. That is already a large number, but as air pollution increases, those numbers are increasing concurrently. The diagnosis of asthma is rising to an extremity, with approximately thirty percent of those diagnoses in children, with environmental factors such as air pollution as the cause (WHO). In the most severe cases, asthma can cause death. Approximately 3,000 asthma cases each year in the United States are fatal, and that number could gradually increase if we do not stop global warming and decrease our role in air pollution.
The evidence clearly provided in this essay strongly supports the argument that greenhouse gases caused by air pollution are the main cause of anthropogenic climate change. The tables and graphs demonstrate just how greenhouse gases contribute to climate change. As is evident, climate change is an ever growing problem globally. Due to the increase in anthropogenic air pollution, greenhouse gases have amplified also, as shown by table 2. Figure one shows how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased exponentially, mirrored by anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide. Ozone is formed when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide react in sunlight. Therefore, ozone is at its peak during hot summer days. Exposure to high levels of ozone can have serious consequences on your health. It can cause respiratory disease, loss of pulmonary elasticity, and premature aging of our lungs. Next, is acid rain, which occurs in the atmosphere in the form of sulfur and nitrogen oxide. These pollutants can have serious damaging affects on aquatic, forest and wildlife ecosystems, as well as deterioration of buildings. Carbon monoxide is another form of pollution. It reduces the blood?s ability to carry oxygen. If a human is exposed to higher levels, it can cause chest pains, angina attacks or even death.

In conclusion, air pollution affects the immune system, making it weak and vulnerable to certain bacteria, illnesses, viruses and foreign invaders. Common diseases that are affected the most include asthma and allergies. Air pollution in general has been seen to modify the immune system's handling of particular allergens. The exposure to toxins like dioxin can cause serious health problems for people. Having long-term exposure to this toxin is connected to weakening of the immune system, as well as the nervous system, endocrine system and certain reproductive functions. Hence, everyone has a particular level and exposure of dioxins in the body.
