Across the United States, the number of ageing baby boomers is increasing significantly. The demographics indicate the need to improve the approaches placed to provide services and resources for this increasing population group. With forecast showing a significant annual increase of the ageing population, current strategies need to be changed and developed to cope with challenges that may arise in future.
Addressing the issue of the ageing population requires an understanding of the demographics associated with the problem. In an argument by Irving (2014) planning is the basic requirement of addressing social needs and issues. The author further asserts that proper planning strategies requires the understanding the state of the problem in regards to how much is offered, and how much is required to address a particular problem (Irving, 2014). Understanding the demographics of the ageing population would allow the creation of solutions based on sensitivity and urgency. For instance, ageing people need proper housing facilities before they could be provided with the ability to fit positively in the perception of the society.
Future plans in addressing the ageing issues are dependent on how much a department or a person understands the demographic forecasts. In an example, demographics predict an increased number of ageing females more than males. For this reason, plans to offer help should be directed more on women needs with an accurate margin difference. Demographics also allows for understanding of the size of social plans required for the ageing population in a specific period of time. The elderly also have a greater need for housing. Many older adults do not have access to proper housing thus the increased dependence on homes. Housing for the elderly should be pre-planned before retirement to ensure decent provision after employment. Each state should have well-developed home based care system for adults living in solitary.
To ensure financial security for the elderly, there should be collaboration between financial institutions and employers to develop well-structured retirement plans. The requirement should be enforced by the federal government, based on the size of the retirement benefits employers offer its employees. Also, nursing homes at the national and state level should be well equipped with both practitioners and infrastructure, in regards to the number of elder adults they house.
