There is always been a deep relationship between a mother and her child. “The Age of Infancy," a poem by Allama Iqbal, is a poem that explains the relationship between a mother and child and how upon the birth of the child the first thing the child sees is its mother. This poem portrays an example of the depth of the bond between a mother and her child, and what their love for one another can sustain. “The earth and sky were unknown worlds to me Only the expanse of mother’s bosom was a world to me Every movement was a symbol of life’s pleasure to me My own speech was like a meaningless word to me During infancy’s pain if somebody made me cry The noise of the door chain would comfort me Oh! The child remembers every moment from the day he/she is born in terms of interactions with its mother. To the extent that when the child is alone and gets scared the presence of its mother is the most comforting thing. Even simple things such as hearing a door open can be soothing so that the child knows the mother is there to protect him/her. There is a deep connection between the child and mother and this means there always be that relationship that will keep them together. The poet Allama Iqbal explains this relationship very clearly; how it’s the most important relationship in mankind and one of the most esteemed. To a child the mother is everything and a child will always look to his/her mom when he/she needs something. When a child is born it doesn’t know anything about its environment, the only thing a child knows is his/her mother’s breast. That’s the most familiar place for the child and that’s where he/she finds food and pleasure. The mother-infant bond is the familiarity and attachment a mother forms with her offspring. These helpless babies are reliant on their mother’s nurture for survival. This dependence reaches farther than a physiological need. Infants rely on their mothers for a wide variety of demands. The mother-infant bond is critical to maximizing the fitness of each individual, as well as the growth of the species.

In Li-Young Lee’s poem “A Story”, the literary devices point of view, metaphors, and the structure of the poem are used to portray the complex relationship of the father and child and their inability to be able to connect with one another despite their wishes to do so.
Sylvia Plath was known as an American Poet, Novelist and Shorty story writer. However, Plath lived a melancholic life. After Plath graduated from Smith College, Plath moved to Cambridge, England on a full scholarship. While Plath was Studying in England, she married Ted Hughes, an English poet. Shortly after, Plath returned to Massachusetts and began her first collection of poems, “Colossus”, which was published first in England and later the United States. Due to depression built up inside, Plath committed suicide leaving her family behind. Sylvia Plath was a gifted and troubled poet, known for the confessional style of her work, which is how “Mirror” came to be. Although this poem may seem like the reader is reading from first person point of view, there is a much deeper meaning behind Plath’s message throughout the poem. Plath uses several elements of terror and darkness to show change to the minds of the readers.
The attachment style that a child endures with their mother initially begins before the child is even born. In the mother’s womb, the infant becomes aware of their mother and father’s voices, where they begin to develop a bond with them and feel nurtured and comforted by the things they hear their parents sing and speak to them. Helen of Troy, known as the most beautiful woman of ancient Greek culture, is the catalyst for the Trojan War. As such, she is the subject of both Edgar Allen Poe’s “To Helen” and H.D.’s “Helen”; however, their perceptions of Helen are opposites. Many poets and authors have written about Helen in regards to her beauty and her treacherous actions. There is a tremendous contrast between the views of Helen in both poems by Poe and Doolittle. Infant Sorrow by William Blake is about the birth of a child into a dangerous world. The meaning behind this poem is that when a baby is born, they are entering a place that is unfamiliar to them and is full of hazardous circumstances and then seeks for safety and comfort by sulking on the mother's breast. Instead of blatantly telling the reader, Blake uses several poetic devices to deliver the meaning of Infant Sorrow. Some of the devices he uses are images, sound, figurative language, and the structure to bring out the meaning of his poem.
Grace for moms says, “Being a mother actually has little to do with birthing a child from your body.” She can show the same love and respect as a birth mother would. Any role model or person looked at with high esteem can be the child’s type of mother. A child’s love is not determined by the given relationship to them but by the acquired one. Some of the strongest bonds are through adopted situations. Some of the biggest motherhood tendencies contain love, protection, and discipline. No part of having these actions or emotions require an actual relation.
Nurturance is the social behavior of providing physical and emotional sustenance in order to adhere to the essential needs of individuals that are perceived to be young, helpless or feeble. The predisposition to nurture can be viewed as a personality trait or temperament. Scholars have often examined the need to nurture and be nurtured. According to scholars nurturance is considered both a biological, psychosocial need. This is visible in mother-child relationships. As an infant, an individual bonds to another individual (usually a mother) who provides a secure base, which provides a sense of emotional stability for the infant. Eventually once the mother-child base is formed the child has the ability to explore new objects and places without feeling afraid or anxious when forming new attachments. From this relationship the mother’s need to protect, and provide for another is satisfied. This is a trait that is usually associated with women and maternal instinct. As a woman one must possess genetic characteristics that better prepare them for motherhood, and as far as social expectations a mother one is expected to nurture and care for their young (Modell, 1989).
While in exile in France Léopold Sédar Senghor wrote a beautiful poem called Black Woman. This poem revolves around Senghor love, definition and praise of a natural black woman. In Senghor’s life and poetry women are viewed in a higher status, are held in high esteem and regard. Senghor poem is more than an individual black African woman, she is an antecedent of his race and thus a symbol of the African race. He takes pride in his race and in this poem especially Senghor completely showed his love and respect for the black woman. Senghor uses an accumulation of metaphors to show his love for African women, and how African black women by portraying them as being beautiful, comforting and emphasis on the black woman’s physical beauty.
Mothers are the primary caretakers of the children. The fathers have had minimal care taking responsibilities. Many women, if they had a career before hand, have to give it up to stay at home with the child. Although, many fathers where the wives must work become important in the process of care taking because their role must increase to their children. Studies of human fathers and their infants confirm that many fathers can act sensitively with their infant (according to Parke & Sawin, 1980) and their infants form attachments to both their mothers and fathers at roughly the same age (according to Lamb, 1977).
The three poets convey the feelings of seriousness, happiness, and failure. In the poem “Simile”, Scott Momaday explains how people and the actions we do are similar to animals in which the comparison was towards deer. In “Moon Rondeau” by Carl Sandburg he illustrates that working together in a relationship, you may be able to accomplish a task and generate a strong bond. In the final poem “Woman” by Nikki Giovanni she displays how one may want to grow and be someone special to your significant other but they may not care of what their other may want. The three poets are illustrating the theme of humans being similar to animals in which case they either work together or they just ignore each other within the literary similarities and differences of the three poems.
