The Modern Olympic Games were a product of their times. After France was embarrassingly defeated in the Franco-Prussian war in 1871, the French people were left with a feeling of inadequacy. These feelings of inadequacy became a driving force for Baron Pierre de Coubertin in his quest to revive the Olympic Games. During the dominant times of The Age of Imperialism, some of the more successful countries found a way to incorporate sports into their educational systems. The competitive values reinforced by sports led to a more competitive society. When Coubertin was examining the societies of more successful countries, he found this to be true and an idea began forming in his mind about how to solve France’s problems. This idea evolved into what is known today as the Olympic Games. What intellectual, geographical, and social factors led to the evolution of the games into both a political and athletic organization? As Coubertin was calling for a reform to French educational systems, he did not want to add a physical education that was unenjoyable like Turnen. Therefore, he looked elsewhere for the basis of the French physical education. The British educational system not only valued the physical results of sports, but also the other effects of sports being intertwined into the educational system. “[G]enerations of Englishmen believed in a vital connection between sports and life’s more serious contests” and Coubertin admired how sports built
Sports Dominate the modern world. One of the biggest sporting events in the Olympics. A lot of aspects went into shaping the modern Olympics. The modern Olympics were shaped from the outlook of competitors, the reflection of the countries, and the economics of participating countries. The Globalization Paradox of the Olympic Games In 2016, the International Olympic Committee, the IOC, decided to allow try outs for a ten-member Refugee Olympic team. These participants would stand under the Olympic flag and, if they were to win a gold medal, the Olympic song would play in place of their national anthem. This idea of a team competing “under an international flag that belongs to the whole world” is a highlight of the unifying effects of globalization (2016:1). However, once the title
118 years ago the first modern Olympic games were held in Athens, with a total of 311 participating athletes from a range of 16 different countries, it is only a fraction of the Olympic Games that we know today (Chalkley, 1999). Not only has the Games grew in number, but it has developed to be a showcase to allow for the host country to demonstrate their physical and economic capabilities. However, the Olympics has received many negative remarks debating whether if it is beneficial to the host.
meaning, “Faster, Higher, Strong,” is the Olympic Motto. From the 1920s to modern day, this motto still holds true. While the motto is still the same, there are many other aspects of American culture that have changed. The 1920’s were characterized by flappers, automobiles, nightclubs, and jazz. Today modern culture is labeled as the technology age, and our obsession for celebrities, including Olympic athletes, is seen through social media and television. Women have taken on more of a leadership role in

INTRODUCTION At the same time that sport is a product of social reality, it is also unique. No other institution, except perhaps religion, commands the mystique, the nostalgia, the romantic ideational cultural fixation that sport does. No other activity so paradoxically combines the serious with the frivolous, playfulness with intensity, and the ideological with the structural. (Frey & Eitzen 504) OLYMPIC ORIGINS AND IDEALS Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic movement, was born in 1863

Sport Record The founding father of the Olympic Movement, Pierre de Coubertin, referred to the sport record as having the same function in the ideology of Olympism as the principle of gravity in Newtonian mechanics (Loland 1995). The record was, so to speak, the eternal axiom of sport. No doubt, Coubertin was right in many ways. The fascination for records is a key element in our fascination for sports. Records are the stuff of which legends and myths are made. Johnny Weissmuller's 1924 one
