Age discrimination is one of the most talked about and most relevant issue in the workplace today. We see that age discrimination can happen to anyone at any level of society. There are laws protecting some but others are left defenseless. The laws that try to protect workers from discrimination have been helpful for some but many still have a hard time proving they have been wronged. Firms know the laws surrounding age discrimination and they will take the necessary steps to avoid a lawsuit. With firms and employees both wanting what is best for themselves, tensions arise between the two.
Many questions surround age discrimination. Should it be relevant in the workplace? Who is more vulnerable to age discrimination? Does age discrimination happen to young workers or old? Also, is age discrimination getting better or worse and would there be a solution to this unfortunate trend? All are very important to completely understand how age discrimination occurs in the workplace. Each one of these questions will be answered as the debate for age discrimination is a wide ranging discussion that will bring light to other problems that occur in firms.
There are a few parties that are involved in the debate for age discrimination. First, we have the employee. He or she would be the first to bring the policy to the forefront if for some reason they feel as if they have been discriminated against. This individual would either bring the issue up to their employer or speak to a lawyer to resolve the issue. This is where the other parties get involved. The employees who are looking for work have the short stick in the deal. Even though there are laws protecting workers over the age of 40, many workers have a hard time proving their case. We need to look to reform the age discrimination policy. There needs to be an added proposal to help younger workers from discrimination. Also, we need to collectively think of ways to help show evidence of age discrimination happening in the workplace. The main solution to this issue to educate workers to be on the lookout for discriminatory acts. Acts that can occur to themselves or others. Having these individuals educated in these areas will only help the process of correcting the age discrimination issues we see today.
