African students inhabit a unique space within the Black population. While some Africans choose to recognize the differences with African and African American cultures in many aspect so their lives, some decide to fully assimilate into the American culture. My research aims to understand whether or not African students have found that they are effortlessly able to switch between their identity as a black person in America and their identity as an African person. ...ful. It is helpful in the sense that this may alleviate some of the hardships that come with African stereotypes. However, there are also negative stereotypes associated with African Americans as well especially in a period of time that cases of police brutality against African Americans is receiving so much coverage in the media.
My research will primarily focus on the ways African students self identify and whether or not the campus and people around them in Chapel Hill have an affect on the way they choose to define themselves. One-on-one interviews will allow me to delve deeper into the rationale behind whatever identity they chose to take on. Incorporating my field notes from the Oasis meetings will help set the interviews in a context that enables the audience to understand how important a space for African students is on a campus that is predominately white.
