Cookson explains what African Americans experience in prep schools. Going off this, he claims that these African Americans in prep schools experience different cultures, therefore are doubly marginalized. Using evidence to show how institutional racism is a known term but numerous people don’t think or know how to react. Racial differences are reinforced by differences in class and wealth. Even though there has been various successful African Americans, there is still a certain kind of racial division. Cookson is an American sociologist, academic, and author. He is the author of twenty books on new models of learning, education reform, inequality. Cookson, even though he probably has never experienced racial inequality, he still very passionate about the topic. Cookson did an exceptional job on explaining his claim. Using evidence of research to defend his clam, he achieved his goal of distributing the information to his audience. Cookson also performed a study on race and class, which is vastly different than the one he did in this article. Showing that he has passion in institutional racism as well as other inequalities within race. Cookson caught my eye when I realized his race was Caucasian. When I first read the article, the author suggested he had gone through this inequality personally, but it was just passion. I admire Cookson and his passionate efforts to educate society about this confusing, unrecognized, yet prominent topic. Educating the public about this subject is challenging, Cookson uses evidence from studies he has performed, then uses the results from the studies to educate. Society listens to facts from the public, or feedback done in a study versus a person’s own opinion or research. Watson is professor of history at the University of North Chapel Hill and director of its Center for the Study of the American South. He draws in his audience by using the phrase, “Man with a Dirty Black Beard” as his title of the journal and uses it throughout the journal. Showing a first-hand experience of how inequality was and still is and how it still effects our school systems today. Using the reference of the man with a dirty black beard and relating it back towards the school systems today and the inequality today was a new perspective. This made me think of things in a different view, seeing how inequality effected the lives of white people just because they obtained less that other whites. Overall Waston challenged a new perspective about history and how it still continues to affect the present.
