The concept of affirmative action was introduced in the United States in the early 1960s as a way to fight racial discrimination in employment opportunities. In 1967, the concept was expanded to include gender discrimination. Reports have shown that minorities have faced discrimination in schools and businesses for many years, which have created unfair advantages for whites and males in education and employment. The goal of affirmative action is to correct the disadvantages associated with past and present discrimination. There is also intent to ensure public institutions, such as universities, are more representative of the diverse population in the country. In my paper I will address affirmative action in higher education and its disadvantages.
Affirmative action is a Band-Aid to a much bigger and more crucial problem, which if we do not address, will never close the existing gaps and we will suffer from inequality in our society for many more years. The problem in my opinion is the gaps in the preparation of students to face high academic levels, and the quality of education to prepare students for college. Once a student is admitted to a highly competitive institution due to affirmative action quotes, it gives continuity to inequality by not being in the same level simply due to the quality of education they received their entire lives.

Affirmative action reinforces stereotypes and racism because of the previous points. People given a position purely because of affirmative action often are not qualified, and furthermore it encourages inferior intellection labeling for minorities. Also, it presupposes that all people of the same skin color or race are from lower classes, and therefore need help. This also reinforces stereotypes and even embeds them permanently into the system.
Simply having people of different races or ethnicities in the university does not necessarily mean diversity of opinion. People with the same skin color are not necessarily the same in opinion or even culture and we can see an example for that in the current presidency race.
