Advocacy in Population Health One only has to look back at the history of nursing to see why advocacy in the area of health for the population is so important. Florence Nightingale fought for change in nursing. Her advocacy for improving health care ultimately changed how nurses were viewed in our country and in the world. She knew that advocating change in the health care system was the only way to improve it. According to Mislead (2016), Involvement in policy decisions and political process is an integral part of the nursing role because of our history, practice, education, and professional organizations. To facilitate planning networking will be important .Key stakeholders, community partners , and leaders would include health professionals, local hospitals ,health departments both state and local , primary care associates , federally funded health programs , local businesses that are health advocates , major university hospitals with research programs, and people from the local communities ( MAPP, 2015) . An important step in the change process is to know how the change will affect the community and use this information to advocate changes for improvement. Networking with these resources will be needed to assist and set priorities to address these deficits in NC. It will also be necessary to tap into local resources such as the Society for Public Health Education ( SOPHE ) who dispenses information to public and health officials about preventing cardiovascular disease. One of these handouts is titled North Carolina Preventing Cardiovascular Disease. (Society for Public Health Education, 2015). This is but one of the ways I would get the information to the patients and stakeholders to help spread information to promote change. Other plans include coordinating a conference with our key stake holders and Laura, as guest speaker to provide information about the program called Healthy People 2020 Heart Disease and Stroke. I would utilize local news stations’ community service ads and attend local churches to educate the community on their own turf. I would also collaborate with other organizations with similar causes to keep momentum going and gain additional support. One of these programs would be the Raise the Voice campaign, a nurse led innovations for changing public policy, this organization include nurse led innovations that emphasis health promotion and wellness, and chronic care management and coordination. (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2014). Other administrative duties would include basic operational duties, supplies, printing space, transportation etc. The slogan for our program would be “Changing the hearts of North Carolina “The next step is to set up a timeline for completion.
