The book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain was published in 1884 and influenced by the author’s personal experiences and thoughts during that time period. Along with The Adventure’s of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain also wrote its predecessor The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The novels became some of Mark Twain’s most popular novels. Twain was one of the most loved authors of his time and his novels are now considered American Classics (Mark Twain Biography). “A gifted raconteur, distinctive humorist, and irascible moralist, he transcended the apparent limitations of his origins to become a popular public figure and one of America’s best and most beloved writers.” (Mark Twain, History.com). Taking from his personal life experiences and his views on racism, the many novels, including The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, helped Mark Twain become one of the most popular authors in America.
Mark Twain lived in America along the Mississippi river during the late nineteenth century. During this time period slavery was very popular and accepted among many. America was in the middle of creating an industrial economy for itself and the dominant business was in transportation. Though the government was corrupt and fell often to greed, a reform was underway. Labor violence, slavery, racial tension, and poverty were all things that were very common during this time period. Many people fell into heavy debt and had difficulty finding ways to earn money to pay it off (Digital History Gilded Age). The Civil War soon broke out as a result of the battle over slavery and racial tensions (Mark Twain House and Museum). Mark Twain lived in Hannibal, Missouri along the Mississippi river as a boy. During his life, Twain wrote some of the most beloved classics like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Innocents Abroad, The Prince and the Pauper, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. By taking from his own life experiences and reflections on America coming into its own, the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain is one of the most well known classics among American culture.
