I’m a college student and I’m from Vietnam. This is my third terms attending at CNM. I am nineteen years old and I’ve been living in New Mexico five years. I was born and lived in Vietnam for fourteen years. I spent fourteen years of life in Vietnam before moving to America. I missed my country ever since my grandpa wanted me and family to move here. Moving to America give me more opportunities to go to school and have a better life. I am going to tell a bit about my background, interests and goals.
When I came to America there are many things that amazed and changed me. For instance Amerian’s life style. Ones of it is my culture history. I thought the biggest holiday in Vietnam such as Lunar New Year would be forgotten because since there’s a small percentage Asian people living here, they probably don’t celebrate holidays, but my grandpa tells me there still Vietnamese churches, temples going on that practice their faith of culture. They still celebrate all of their traditional holidays. I started going to church and exploring my life by participate in activities such as joining clubs, playing sports. As a college student my dream is become dental hygienist. My goala are become closer and closer every day, and I thought to myself I’m going to achieve this someday in future. As a college student my primary goal is helping people, become a dental hygienist, and take care of my parents.

I began showing interest in the English language because I wanted to make new friends at school. Metaphorically speaking, I believe that language is the key to unlock communication. Because of this intrinsic motivation, I started allowing the English language to soak in my brain. My acceptance in English began to show through the number of friends that I made at school. At the time of learning English, one of my biggest barriers was trying to comprehend whole sentences. I had an extremely difficult time understanding the connection between words when placed in a sentence. Communication was definitely a struggle that I faced in elementary school. I picked up meaning simply by listening to words that I was familiar with. I was very limited in English. The words I remembered using the most were, “yes,” “no,” “paper,” “pencil”, “broke,” “sharp,” “restroom”, “okay,” “don’t know,” and “go play.” I did not attempt to deliver full sentences unless I was assigned to read a passage from a
America has been a land of dreams from its beginning. People immigrate to start a new life and reinvent themselves, but even the hardest working individuals have been mistreated. Life in America is sweet and it is easy to succeed. America has ample resources to support the growth of its citizens especially young people. This enviable country, The United States, rewards hard work and high achievers are encouraged to chase their dreams. I thought that being here was a big opportunity, that I should take advantage of it. In my family, education comes first, without an education, your chances of succeeding are slim. My mom always told me, "Work hard now and enjoy later," meaning if I put in the work now I will reap the benefits later. To me, the American dream means that one can succeed and reach the highest level of achievement if one puts one’s mind to it. A research shows that “ America is very good at adopting new things and it’s a place that it’s ok to do what you want” but people should start finding happiness; they should realize what they are meant to do in this world. After living here for almost five years, my parents realized where they belong to and it’s their hometown of Hue, Vietnam. I hope that people find their real home like how my parents did. Writing this essay, I hope to understand more about other immigrant’s lives in the U.S. I want to discover all the stories that will help others understand what life is like because I’m sure that there are people who are happy but there are also people that similar to my family.
Teachers who work with English Language Learners know that academic language takes longer to achieve proficiency in than does conversational language. On average, ELL students need at least two years to achieve conversational language and, five to nine years to develop academic language proficiency. Many English words ELL students are exposed to in school, they have not yet learned or even heard in their first language, which makes transference of knowledge impossible. The vast differences in the ability to use conversational versus academic language can be a hindrance to these students and have lasting effects on their academics and therefore, their lives.
Since I still wanted to make friends, I desperately continued to try to break down the barrier between my peers and I and I slowly began to succeed. As I began making more and more friends, my experience in the U.S. started to become a happier one. Although there were still many things about American culture that I did not understand, I chose to face my fears head on which lead to a more content life. I realized that no matter where you are from, what obstacles you had to face, or what social class you belong to, coming to America gives you an opportunity to build a new and better life for you and your family. The journey to learn this lesson was not an easy one, but I’m glad I learned it.

Everyone has dream in life. Some people have a dream to visit different places and some people want to become successful in future. Likewise I also had a dream to come USA and to become successful in future. I was 17 when I came here with my parents. I heard a lot from my friends about their first day in USA. They said it was so sad however mine was the best day and the long day in my life which I can’t ever forget. I still remember that day in USA; I was sleeping in the airplane because I was so tired of traveling 18 hours flight. I was in a deep sleep suddenly I heard someone was calling my name because of that I wake up. It was my mom who was calling me. She told me to look outside I rub my eyes and looked outside. I still remember that moment when I first looked California, USA through plane window, those tall building which I saw in movies looks like a plane ground. I was so excited to be here in USA I feel like it is a piece of heaven.
When I was young, I never expected to live such a lit life in America. I was born in Laos which is a small country in the Southern part of Asia. My life was slow and my family didn’t have much. Then one day my mom met my stepdad in a bar and the next thing I knew, we move to America. My first impression of America was that it was way different than where I came from. I saw snow for the first time and never felt something so cold. My early life in America was a struggle, but as I grew up, I started understanding what my purpose was. I went from nothing to having great times with great friends, having cash flow, and riding motorcycles.
The American Dream can obliterate any prospect of satisfaction and does not show its own unfeasibility. The American dream is combine and intensely implanted in every structure of American life. During the previous years, a very significant number of immigrants had crossed the frontier of the United States of America to hunt the most useful thing in life, the dream, which every American human being thinks about the American dream. Many of those immigrants sacrificed their employments, their associations and connections, their educational levels, and their languages at their homelands to start their new life in America and prosper in reaching their dream.
At first, my very first experience in the United States is so bored, depressed, and hopeless. It was a new journey for me, I learn a language that I had never learned before, I get bullied just because I am the only one Asian who do not speak English. However, my life has become better when I realized that the “American Dream” is possible. Well, for me, the term “American Dream” is fitting for the one who attends at school, who has confidence and hard work. It might be a dream for my generation but not my parents. People around the world all believe in something, but what keeps them from giving up on their dreams is the simple idea of hope: the concept that whatever one dreams about can become their reality. Even so, one must be persistent in their actions as things are not just handed out in life. One must work towards what they want, putting in their greatest effort until the end. Both hope and persistence are two key ingredients when one is striving for success, such that both put together can help bring anyone to their dreams.
