The Adult Learning Theories Essay assignment provides information on how learning takes place throughout different stages in life. The topic begin with how learning take place in humans, how one develops throughout various stages in life, the learning process, and blending adult learning and development experiences. The course content requires mastery because learning never ends once it begins at birth. The importance of knowing what is learned in each stage of life builds upon what is already learned which will lead to the next stage of development.
Reflecting back on how every human has the capacity to learn once born caused my understanding of the meaning of learning to widen. Once learning begins it never stops but continues throughout the lifespan of the individual learner. My mind pondered over how a newborn actually learned and Dr. Jean Piaget believed in this learning taking place through forms of structure in children. Piaget also studied the four stages to observe learning behaviors Palmer (2006). However, this lead to what first influenced my thinking about the field of adult education. The first stage is sensorimotor starting from age zero to two where the sense of feeling, touching, sucking and handling occurs through a reflex of what is encountered by the baby. The second stage is preoperational starting from age two to six where internalized actions occur to be converted into images. Images and shapes are recognized greatly during this stage of development. Next, the concrete operations stage develops from the range of seven to eleven years. Health becomes important to this learner special at the age of fifty. Lastly, late adulthood stage starts at age sixty and over. Sickness and disease is believed to attack learners in this stage of life. You will continue your education to help your mind remain sharp in this stage. Predictable challenges of experiences in the fixed sequences in this stage help the learner to be more mature using decision making solutions.
My reflection over this course allowed me to understand that learning can and do occur over and over in life connecting all of life experiences at one time or another. This was a very important course because as an educator knowing the era the learner is in can be very helpful to meet the learning need.
