I have served over 450 hours at the AEC as part of the Close Scholars, a serviced-based scholarship program, and shared intimate conversations with various individuals about their families and pasts; but their memories of those moments still seem to slip away. My grandmother’s memory also slowly slipped away from her in her early 60’s. Her fading reality made her world increasingly confusing while it made my family and me suffer continuously. Having a first-hand experience with older adults with neurocognitive disorders, I understand that it is an immensely painful situation. Therefore, I hope to find methods to promote healthy aging and contribute to the field of Neuroscience.
After enrolling in Biological Psychology with Dr. Sleigh at Winthrop, I was certain that I wanted to study the more biological aspects of psychology. I am aware of the challenges that come with working in his lab and would be more than excited to begin research there.
Receiving training from Emory University will provide me with the skill set to continue conducting research. After receiving my Ph.D., I will begin postdoctoral research with the skills that I will have acquired from my graduate studies. Following my postdoctoral research, I hope to obtain a position at a research institution where I can teach Biological Psychology courses and continue examining memory and cognitive aging. I hope to build on the current understanding of memory processes and encourage healthy aging.
