As a result, adolescents tend to seek out people that may similar stressors or that understand the particular situation they are in, in order to seek out guidance and support so that they can accomplish the goals themselves. Adolescents find solace in groups that allow for them to grow independently, but also that will encourage them or be an emotional soundboard to reflect upon. These support groups are those in which the adolescent feels comfortable around, it can be peers, church goers, athletic coaches, or family members. This safety net of people backing the adolescent’s success fosters the positive environment needed for the adolescent to gain confidence in their actions and to feel able to cope with stressful situations.
The group in which the adolescent associates themselves with will play a huge factor in the adolescent’s ability for growth and future successes. Adolescents who are apart of an environment that set up expectations and goals for them allow for the adolescent to take on the responsibility of accomplishing them as they come to understand the standards placed upon them, and so, create a structured path in which will lead them to an end result of success. In addition, the two sub-groups within the Conventional Level further expand the moral reasoning behind adolescent’s choices as it relates to societal standards. Moral decisions made within stage three reflect upon the social implications from which people would perceive the particular decision made by by adolescent, where the adolescent would feel favorable to behave within a certain way if they believe that their peer/support group would encourage or accept the particular behavior to be illustrated. Within stage four, adolescents will recognize the importance of maintaining and adhering social order. Therefore, adolescents will make their decisions in regard to whether there are larger-scale consequences or negative viewpoints from the public.
