When I begin a class I always read over the syllabus and scan through the current policy and procedure manual but never realized how pertinent it would become in me continuing on within the NICC Nursing program. There is no tolerating any type of academic dishonesty with three listed outcomes as possibilities for the school finding just cause of academic dishonesty which includes cheating and plagiarism. The school could give a zero for the exam in question, assign an F for the course, or refer the student for expulsion, probation or suspension. I read this before I knew what the outcome would be to prepare myself for the worst. Even though I was disappointed in receiving a 0 on the exam I understand the gravity of what happened. I am very lucky to have only received the 0 and not more serious outcomes. I never in a million years would have believe that this section would be something I needed to read over and over again to gain perspective on what could have been. I have to take this opportunity to stay in the program to prove that I belong there and can become a great nurse, grow and learn from this experience. I appreciate the nursing administration for allowing me to continue in the program and realize more than ever this is my hands and I control what happens. One of the most important considerations before embarking on the development plan is to ensure that the graduate has all the relevant skills in terms of academic, professional and personal qualifications. Under the personal qualifications, the nursing graduates should make sure that their ethical and moral standards are compliant with the ethical guidelines as well as with the ethical traits expected of them by the society (Trossman, 1999). Without these traits, nursing practice would be marred by many unprofessional and unethical behaviors that would compromise on the quality of services offered by the nurses.
Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.

With that said, the nursing profession has a unique code of ethics, that though at times challenging, it is each nurses duty to uphold. Specific provisions can guide a preceptor in navigating and facilitating a conversation that can help a student nurse to understand the journey that lies ahead. More importantly, the student must understand how the profession defines their client, or in nursing, the patient. The ANA Code of Ethics defines the term patient by the derivative meaning, “the one who suffers” (ANA, 2001).
