Adjustment Problems of International Students in their New College Community
When international students arrive in a foreign country, the first thing they do is to find a place to live. They have to register classes, know where to get their food from and learn the names of places and buildings around the university. International student, as compared to their domestic counterparts, tend to experience bigger adjustment problems and more suffering during their orientation into the university. Knowledge of the foreign language is important even in understanding what the teachers say in class and when communicating with other people. If a foreign student does not know the language of that country, he will have many problems communicating with other people and understanding the teacher in class. When Riyad came to study in the U.S some years ago he could not understand English language. He had not learnt how to write even his name in English or say it. He only knew Arabic. He thought that he will learn English very fast and continue with his major which was taught in English. His problem started when other Saudi Arabians he had travelled with were given a different hostel from his. No one could understand what he was saying because only few people understood Arabic. He had to use sign language. He could not even use a translator. This disappointed him very much and knew that he would have more problems in class. He had to drop the courses for that semester and take some time to learn Basic English language. An international student will have many problems with learning foreign language like English in America but if they have no confidence, they cannot use even the simplest styles to learn how to speak the basic language from others or from sign language or get help from an international student …show more content…
Adjustment problems can be caused by the student’s lack of confidence. Lack of confidence makes the student feel weak and not able to avoid problems such as asking for directions, borrowing money from other students and how to handle discrimination and other personal problems people experience. International students may encounter discrimination that may prompt lower self-esteem and other emotional health issues. Halima had a hard time in her first year of college when she realized that she was the only African student in her class. Most of her classmates were from wealthy backgrounds in the U.S. and they looked down upon her. This being her first time in a foreign country, it stressed her up so much because she did not know how to handle discrimination problems. This made her life very hard and she always felt uncomfortable in class. She feared other students were better than her. This really lowered her self-esteem and at some point she had to see a psychologist to help her have some confidence in herself. International students normally have adjustment problems because they lack confidence in themselves which make it hard for them to interact with other new
Imagine living every day without enough money for basic needs like food. Then add studying for exams, three to four-hour labs, and four to five 1 hour long lectures to the top of that… This is what some university students go through every day. After paying tuition, students barely have enough money to buy food for the rest of the term. A sociological study was done to see if students actually experience food insecurity like the university stereotype proposes. In the last few years, studying abroad has become an increasingly popular choice for higher education among international students (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). An average of 10% of students in universities all across the UK are international students from countries all over the world. (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). Although the experience is different for each individual student, there are many common problems that international students face. Those problems include: culture shock to varying degrees coupled with emotional issues(Bailey, 2005), Language barriers along with other communication problems (Sherry et al, 2009), and academic problems due to a change in school curriculum (Ramachandran, 2011). This essay will expand on the common problems faced by international students in the UK, offer solutions for handling the problems, and making the process of acclimating to a new environment easier for students.
Language is a very powerful thing. It is the way that people communicate with each other. For a foreigner living in America I think that this is essential. This is why I believe that if a foreigner only attempts to learn English, then they are already assimilating to American culture. Whether or not they choose to change their whole lifestyle into an American way of life, if they take on the English language then they are assimilating to a certain extent.
The language barrier is potentially high in situations where cultures are widely differing and languages may not even share a common alphabet, for example between the West and China, making it extremely difficult for expatriates to acquire a high degree of language ability (Selmer, 2006)
In addition to spending more on the actual education and university fees, the international students also have to spend on boarding and food. Finding a place to stay that is conveniently near to the university and other places of interaction, is affordable, accepts immigrants, and suits the basic requirements - is hard, sometimes impossible. A compromise on at least one criterion of the above is required to sustain in the new country.
Language is the main way to communicate with others, and when a foreigner comes to a new country, the communication is the major thing he has to deal with. According to the text, “the first is so obvious it hardly needs mentioning-language. Vocabulary, syntax, idioms, slang, dialects, and so on, all cause difficulties, but the person struggling with a different language is at least aware when he is in this kind of trouble” (p. 69). Language is an obvious blockade in a cross-culture communication, because of the different grammar, words, slang, and so on. If a person knew the language of that country, at least he could know when he is in the trouble and what kind of the trouble, and I perceive this as the most important thing, to be able to understand. The difficulty of learning a language, is not only know the vocabulary and syntax, but the actual meaning of the sentences. A students comfortability with the culture of their new home can determine their learning experience. It can be an emotional rollercoaster, being so far away from family and friends. American culture is difficult to understand. International students find Americans to be confusing. Social norms vary depending on the part of the country a person is in.
Foreign language skills can be useful in promoting American foreign interests. In a global economy, doing business abroad is paramount, but language barriers can be a burden. Opponents of a foreign language requirement in education would argue that most foreign businessmen already speak English. Admittedly, most foreign competitors do speak English, but only out of necessity. They learned to speak English in an effort to better communicate with their American counterparts and take advantage of the money making potential of doing business in America.
Being a new college student can be tough. Balancing new work levels, trying to manage your time & also getting enough sleep are the main difficulties for a new college student coming straight from high school in my opinion. These problems can be easily solved by going to class and using the resources that are provided to you. This may not seem difficult but in reality it 's right in front of your face.

They need to practice housekeeping, to manage a budget, and to find their way around new place. Stress is also a part of every student’s daily life.
