“ADHD (Attention Deficit w/Hyperactive Disorder) is a serious disability that affects eleven percent of children aged from four to even seventeen years old. Worldwide ADHD prevalence studies conducted between 1992 and 2005. It reveals that reported rates of ADHD among school-aged children are significant, and range between four and fourteen percent” (cdc.gov). Many people are prescribed medication for ADHD as a first source of treatment; the seriousness of this problem is that most medications have serious side effects such as liver failure, heart failure, even suicide. These could affect how a student learns.

ADHD “was recognized and described long before it became known as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and eventually as ADHD” (“The Past, Present, and Future of ADHD.” Chris Lliades). Discovered in 1902 by an English Pediatrician named Sir George Still, he described a group of children who were disobedient, emotional, and uninhibited. He later blamed these types of behaviors on their family members with psychiatric disorders and on biology. His early theories were that most of these children were the victims of poor parenting and that more discipline was the best of treatments. As the knowledge of ADHD has evolved, so was the name of the commonly diagnosed disorder and the recommended treatments. ADHD was later recognized as a true mental disorder by the 20th century but was only thought to be due to serious damage to the brain. “In the 1960s and 70s, we probably only recognized the most serious cases of ADHD,” said Scott J. Hunter, Ph.D., director of pediatric neuropsychology at the University of Chicago. “The condition was described as ‘minimal brain dysfunction’ or ‘hyperkinetic reaction of childhood.’” He said it was th...

The medical evaluations assess whether a child is manifesting symptoms of ADHD, based on three objectives. Assess problems of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that the child is currently experiencing. Though most medicines don 't affect learning in a bad way, they are known to make patients focus more than usual. This affects the student 's academic life and life outside of school.
Based on the knowledge of the medications and how they affect learning the real issue are drug abuse and overuse of the medication. Most medications don’t affect learning badly but affect the academic and behavioral symptoms better than how they would act without medicine. In conclusion, different types of medications don’t affect how students learn but increase their attention span.
