The Adaptation of Romeo and Juliet by Baz Luhrmann In 1996 an australian film director Baz Luhrman introduces the new adaptation of the ageless love story – “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. The action is moved to America and happening in the end of 20th century. In an imaginary city Verona Beach the two powerful clans Montague (Anglo-Saxon) and Capulet (Latinos) brutally rival. The swords are substituted with the guns, the ancient costumes with jeans and shirts. The art director Catherine Martin didn’t have any lack of materials, since the 20th century brought a great variety of heels, lighters, shirts, bikers, rockers, leather, tattoos, piercing, etc. The creators originally approached the small details: the street posters …show more content…
It is Act I Scene V in the play and Shakespeare starts it with the servant’s talking and welcoming the guests. This part is completely cut out in the adaptation, it is substituted with dances and Mercutio singing. The substitution wasn’t a loss, in fact it brought more action to the film and introduced character’s costumes. This part is also shown from Romeo’s point of view. The characters is one thing that really gives the director a credit. He made them all really interesting. On the costume feast the costumes symbolically represent the inner worlds of the characters. Lord and Lady Capulet thinking of themselves as the supreme dressed up as Caesar and Cleopatra respectively, Benvolio and his friends are shown as barbarians, not seeing anything around himself Paris wearing a space suit and Tybalt is shown as a devil. Romeo dressed as a knight in shining armor, whom each girl waits for. Leonardo Di Caprio played Romeo as no other actor could, he fully represented the image of Shakespeare’s Romeo. Juliet dresses as light angel as she is. Juliet played by Claire Danes and she is symbol of love. Sweet, young Juliet is not a perfect beauty, she is the girl-next-door. Shakespeare’s Juliet is young and not looking for love, and Lhurmann’s Juliet is romantic, dreamy, innocent, not capable of hypocrisy and betrayal. Mercutio dressed up as a diva from cabaret. The director was able to make this character really interesting. Drugs and indifference help him to hide from the outside world very well. The way he dressed up for the party is another symbol of modernism. High heels, make-up, diva’s wig help make him a great example of a showman of the twentieth century. And the thing that he dressed as a woman not just shows how much fun Mercutio is, but also that he hasn’t come to terms with his sexuality
Did you know that Romeo and Juliet was one of the biggest love story of all time. Romeo and Juliet is a story of two star-crossed lovers from two families the Capulets and the Montagues. The Capulets and the Montague had a big fight that made the families very angry at each other. Romeo and Juliet decide to get married. The two couple marry and run away. In the process both of them will die. When it comes to Romeo and Juliet who are the top three people that caused the two to die. The two people that are chosen are Friar Lawrence and Lady Capulet. Friar was chosen because he is the one that married Romeo and Juliet. Lady Capulet was chosen because she is forcing Juliet to marry Paris which is making Juliet want Romeo even more. The third thing
The astounding perils of young love has been eloquently captured in the story of Romeo and Juliet. Franco Zefferelli and Baz Luhrmann are the creators of the two most renowned film adaptations of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Zefferelli, the more traditional director, created his Oscar winning version in 1968. Baz Luhrmann put an abstract, modern twist on Shakespeare's classic and created the 1996 version that raised millions of dollars in box office sales. Being that these two films are so different, I have chosen to compare them to one another, using the famed balcony scene as my focus.
The scene shown in this slide shows many changed personalities of the characters. Lady Capulet, who is usually calm and virtuous, becomes irritated at Juliet’s behaviour. Capulet, an easy-going person, is enraged at Juliet’s disobedience and unwillingness. The Nurse, who is Juliet’s comforter and counselor, becomes “wicked”, when she suggests that she marry Paris instead. Juliet also shows her maturity, by making decisions and speaking for herself on what she thinks is right. Her growth and independence starting from Act 1 to Act 3 is truly shown in this scene.
William Shakespeare composed the tragedy Romeo and Juliet in the 16th century. This play vividly portrayed the banned love between the heirs of two families. Spoiler alert, Romeo and Juliet killed themselves in the end. Every person in Romeo and Juliet held responsibility for their death. Among all of the characters, Friar Lawrence and Capulet were major catalysts of the casualties. Let's not forget Romeo, the one that started it all.
Through his motivation to find love, Romeo, a dynamic character, changes from a subdued individual, into a jovial lovesick character. In the early sections of the play, Romeo is in love with a woman named Rosaline who does not reciprocate those feelings. This leads him to drone on about, “sad hours “ (I.i.146) and how he would, “rather weep” (I.i.167) because he is, “out of her favour” (I.i.154). The importance of Romeo’s affection for each of his women is essential to address. The feelings that Romeo possesses inevitably leads him to become sorrowful over rejection but then, optimistic for Juliet. Later on in the play, once Romeo meets Juliet, he is quick to forget the love that he had for Rosaline and the grieving that he had underwent. After meeting her at Capulet’s ball Romeo states that she is, “my
Advice is always helpful and it can be used to solve many problems. But advice can also be dangerous if the outcome is not considered. In William Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet, the blame for Romeo and Juliet's death lies on Friar Laurence. In spite of being the most kind, sensible and thoughtful person, he presents misleading advises and actions towards the lovers which lead to their tragic death. Friar Laurence's deceptive advices and actions towards the lovers are secretly marrying Romeo and Juliet in the hope of getting two families together and bring peace to Verona, Friar Laurence organizes poorly for the plan of Juliet's fake death which causes the death of the lovers, Friar Laurence proposes a plan to fake Juliet's death and gives her the potion which leads to Romeo and Juliet's death.
Many people think that society has changed so much over the years. That the way that children act, has taken a turn for the worst, but in reality children are learning from their ancestors. Children are lying to their parents, they are sneaking out at night to be with a boy that is “the one”, children are going back into the age of Shakespeare. In the play “Romeo and Juliet” which was written by William Shakespeare in 1597, there are two teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, who fall in love with each other. These two teenagers try to do everything that they can to live the rest of their lives together, except their families despise each other, so there is no way that they can live the rest of their lives together. So, many people believe that the way that our children are growing up today is taking away the fun parts of their childhood. However in this play Juliet did many of the things that teenagers are trying to do now. Children and sometimes adults now need to realize how your actions not only affect you but also the people around you, you also need to think about the consequences of the actions you make. At first Juliet falls in love at first sight with Romeo, then she takes a potion, which causes her family to think she is dead, and then how Friar Lawrence helps Juliet with the scheming, which shows how adults have to think about others as well.
There was action and there was tragedy, but put it all together to make the perfect comedy and a perfect tragic story. William Shakespeare wrote the play Romeo and Juliet, said to be the finest written play in history, for its originality and it's many plots. This story will take you through a lot of mixed emotion and will show you what a true feud is. This story is laid out perfectly because of its true holding and both family's passion for their children. William Shakespeare wrote the story to show how Romeo and Juliet's love for each other will show their youth and immaturity. Their over reacting cost them their life. At such a young age they thought they could never love another being again, and so, " A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life."(Act one scene one)
Romeo and Juliet presents an ongoing feud between the Montague and Capulet families whose children meet and fall in love. Markedly, the meeting scene depicting love at first sight continues to be praised by today’s critics. Romeo and Juliet then receive the label of star-crossed lovers whose tragic demise is written in the stars. In fact, Shakespeare 's work is well received and its numerous adaptations have made it one of his most enduring and notorious stories. The cinematic world brings to the screens a disastrous approach by Baz Luhrmann to do the play justice. A glance at Baz Luhrmann’s productions allows audiences to assume he delivers movies which are unlike those of any other filmmaker today, or perhaps ever. Therefore, blending a delicate
Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story about two young lovers who are forced to be estranged as a result of their feuding families. The play is about their struggle to contravene fate and create a future together. As such, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood would try and emulate Shakespeare’s masterpiece. This had been done before in many films. Prominent among them were, Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 “Romeo and Juliet” and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 “William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.” Both films stay true to the themes of Shakespeare’s original play. However, the modernised Luhrmann film not only maintains the essence of Shakespeare’s writings, Luhrmann makes it relevant to a teenage audience. This is done through the renewal of props and costumes, the reconstruction of the prologue and the upgrading of the setting, whilst preserving the original Shakespearean language. Out of the two, it is Luhrmann who targets Romeo & Juliet to a younger audience to a much larger extent than Zeffirelli.

Teenagers that are in love tend to be impulsive and bad at making decisions. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, two star-crossed lovers from families that don’t get along have to go against their parents, so they can be together. The language that Shakespeare uses depicts the characters and shows that they are impulsive, which affects the outcome of the play.
The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the nurse is Juliet’s lower-class nurse. She is a loquacious, insolent trusting but yet dishonest character in the play. The only character that Juliet trusts and usually is seen cracking dirty jokes
In Romeo & Juliet, one major element of design is the setting because the film took place in Verona, Italy which suggests the use of décor, costumes, and hairstyles. Zefirelli uses on location within an exterior scene in figure one as a key element of symbolism that portrays the division between the two families living in separate castles. Another element of design that Zefirelli uses are costumes in order to distinguish the differences between the Capulet family and the Montague family. In figures two and three, Juliet is wearing a “high-waisted empire dress made from thick, plush velvet, with flowing sleeves” that is more of a subtle red and gold costume, while the Capulet family’s costumes were more contrast colors of red and gold (CITE). Zefirelli differentiated Juliet from her family in order to portray to the audience that her family is a part of the conflict, while she is portrayed as an unbiased character. He also distinguishes Romeo and his family’s costumes. Romeo’s costume consisted of dark red and blue with some contrast in his sleeves of bright blue, but the Montagues differed from Romeo because the Montagues had no significant bright contrast in their costumes. Another difference was the hairstyles between the Capulets and Montagues and differs in hierarchy amongst the two families. In figure two, the royal Capulet women have the hornedhead dressed cap covering their
Everyone is to blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Romeo, Juliet, Friar Laurence, and Romeo and Juliet’s parents all played their own role in causing the four deaths of Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt, and Paris. It is not just one of them to blame, every one of them did something to cause the tragedy. Some of them played a bigger role than others, but everyone contributed. Fate had nothing to do with it and it was all the different characters faults. Romeo, Juliet, and Friar Lawrence’s rash decisions where the main cause of the tragedy.
