Smoking Kills. This is no longer a myth, it’s a fact. According to the British Medical Journal, every time a person smoke a cigarette, he or she will lose about eleven minutes of life here on earth and subject yourself to cancer. In the advertisement below, you can easily tell from just looking at the picture that this ad is against smoking. The ad portrays the message that smoking is deadly, and is able to be comprehended by people of all ages in the hopes that the viewers do not get into a fatal habit such as abusing cigarettes. Essentially, smoking cigarettes is a long term form of suicide. A man is holding a lit cigarette in his hand with his middle and pointer finger, and his thumb held up. As shown in the ad, the man is holding his three fingers out as if they were a firearm. On the wall behind him is a shadow of what should be the man’s hand, except the hand is holding what is clearly depicted as a gun. This was clearly deliberate so that an audience could see and tell the difference and what it resembles. Incase you didn’t grasp the idea of this ad from the pictures, there are words that go along with the picture. “Smoking kills. About 106,000 people in the UK die each year due to smoking.” A message cannot really get much more direct than that. This image is powerful and can be broken down and dissected in order to obtain an even more detailed look on the ad.
The first thing the viewer should feel when seeing this is the seriousness that it portrays. The font is black and bold, and the background is a mix of black and grey. Because when those people grow up and tell their children and grandchildren what the effects of smoking are, it will be passed from generation to generation. This could result in a rapid decline of smokers and a more healthy world we live in.
It’s one thing to have a sign that simply says, “Smoking is bad for you.” That idea is brought to a whole new level by this ad. It grabs the reader’s attention, pulls them in, and expresses a very important point that needs to be stressed all over the world. The hand and gun relationship is extremely crucial to know what you’re looking at in the advertisement. It can manipulate a person who is viewing it in almost any setting. It can set a mood towards smoking, leave a lasting impression, and change smoking culture as we know it today.
