Achilles was a son of King Peles and Thetis, his birth was the result of a union between a mortal father and an immortal mother, which made him a semi divine. According ( Bobbitt 47), Achilles was one of the great heroes of Greek mythology due to his extra ordinary strength, courage and loyalty. Miller also terms him as a fearless soldier and honorable man with god like qualities who is very respected by people that surrounded him (27). In the Iliad, Homer illustrates Achilles flaws despite being regarded as a great warrior and hero amongst the Achaean soldiers, who are fighting against the Trojans in the Trojan War.

In analyzing the character Achilles in Iliad, Homer brilliantly personifies the river god that he terms as the conflict between them as being a conflict between two beings. However, the personification is a dramatic illustration of a man caught in a flood, whilst though, at the same time, it is a vivid description of a man caught in a flood, while plain fighting for his life. The poem creates more sense and becomes more influential when the reader creates it in his/her mind, while taking into account a deep debris of trees, rough rocks and strong waves pouring against Achilles.
