Neo-natal care has become a common practice that is incorporated in the healthcare plan. The reason for its development is to ensure that infants who are born ill are taken care of and that their lives are safeguarded against the possible dangers they could experience while in the community. One of the issues that affect neo natal care is poverty. When the environment within which infants are brought up is poor or hazardous, their lives are significantly affected.
Poverty is measured in terms of consumption levels and income. In most instances, mothers conceive unwillingly and this leads to the infants being subjected to conditions that are not conducive for their growth. When the consumption level and the income are low, mothers barely afford the good life they would wish for their infants. This means that the life of the infant is endangered by unhygienic and contemptible living conditions (Kaplan, Turrell, & Lynch, 2001, p. 260).
Poverty is therefore one of the major environmental issues that can affect the health of an infant. When an ill born child is subjected to a poor life, there are slim chances of receiving the best health services. Many of the children that are born in poor environments receive poor quality health services and this makes it hard for them to attain good health (Murali & Oyebode, 2004, p. 220). Poverty affects both physical and mental health, and malnutrition is one of the physical effects that are experienced in a poverty-ridden environment. The inability to afford a balanced diet causes individuals to develop health related problems including marasmus and kwashiorkor, common in the Far East and Africa.

.... Planning entails setting aside a certain amount of money, through either insurances or any other possible means, for the sake of the child. The availability of enough supportive funds ensures that the child is protected from malnutrition and infectious diseases (Aber, Bennet, & Conley, 1997, p. 470).
Regular vaccination should also be provided for by setting aside enough funds to cater for the infant’s development. In addition, getting post natal guidance is essential as it ensures that the child is well protected and that his growth is not affected. With proper postnatal information, the caregiver can be in a position to evaluate whether or not the conditions within which a child is subjected to, are favorable. The caregiver should avoid exposing the child to violent and hazardous conditions to ensure that he/she is protected from physical and mental harm.
Neonatal nursing is a field of nursing designed especially for both newborns and infants up to 28 days old. The term neonatal comes from neo, "new", and natal, "pertaining to birth or origin”. Neonatal nurses are a vital part of the neonatal care team. These are trained professionals who concentrate on ensuring that the newborn infants under their care are able to survive whatever potential life threatening event they encounter. They treat infants that are born with a variety of life threatening issues that include instances of prematurity, congenital birth defects, surgery related problems, cardiac malformations, severe burns, or acute infection. Neonatal care in hospitals was always done by the nursing staff but it did not officially become a specialized medical field until well into 1960s. This was due to the numerous advancements in both medical care training and related technology that allowed for the improved treatment and survival rate of premature babies. According to the March of Dimes, one of every thirteen babies born in the United States annually suffers from low birth weight. This is a leading cause in 65% of infant deaths. Therefore, nurses play a very important role in providing round the clock care for these infants, those born with birth defects or other life threatening illness. In addition, these nurses also tend to healthy babies while their mothers recover from the birthing process. Prior to the advent of this specialized nursing field at risk newborn infants were mostly cared for by obstetricians and midwives who had limited resources to help them survive (Meeks 3).
The nurse should assess both the child and caregiver’s compliance with childhood immunization along with any concerns, fears, misconceptions, and contradictions that they may have. Parents must be forced to vaccinate their children. The detrimental effects of failing to vaccinate a child can be spine chilling for not only your child but you and your loved ones around. Despite our best efforts to keep our children safe, their lives are unhygienic, a proverbial germ fest some might argue.
