Alex was homeschooled from first to twelfth grade and never once desired to go to public school. He was very happy with the academic freedom homeschooling provided. Not only was he able to choose what he wanted to learn, but he got to spend as much time as he needed on a subject and was not forced to wait for others once he mastered it. Rather than him relying on a lecture to introduce the material and clarifying it in the textbooks, he was challenged to understand ideas, events, and data on his own. Homeschooling forced him to think for himself and to apply himself since he was not able to copy and not spoon-fed the material (Larabell). All of these factors positively impact the academic performance of homeschooled children. There has …show more content…
When put in a classroom of several students with a wide range of abilities, not all of the students can receive the attention and assistance they need from that teacher. Many of the students find it frustrating that the teachers cannot give the individualized attention they feel they need to succeed because the pace at which a student learns is different with everyone. In the article, Isabel Lyman includes a study done by Raymond Moore which states that “[...] hyperactivity, nearsightedness, and dyslexia, were often the result of prematurely taxing a child’s nervous system and mind with continuous academic tasks, like reading and writing”(“Homeschooling”). At home education allows children to start school when they are mentally ready. It also allows them to move at a comfortable pace which will help them to perform academically well. It is hard for a student who is struggling to keep up with students that are excelling, if they never get the personal attention and flexibility they need to move at their own pace. Homeschooling allows every individual struggling, to keep working on it until they fully understand and master that basic skill or concept before going to a more advanced one. With students who are excelling, they are not forced to wait for others who are …show more content…
In public school, they are required to take a certain curriculum, not allowing the students to exceed in what they are good at. The government schools cram all of this information in the student’s head from many different subjects, expecting them to show amazing academic performance, but that is not the case. In the article, Drenovsky and Cohen argue that “the traditional structures of mass public schooling has been criticized for leaving many children behind while instilling a hidden curriculum of blind obedience to authority” (“The Impact of Homeschooling”). When students are homeschooled, parents may customize the child’s curriculum to where they can accelerate their learning by tailoring their education around the areas where the child excels. For example, if a child is good at math but struggling in english, they will be able to take a more advanced math while taking a lower level english until they can move on to a more advanced english. This allows academic excellence for the student as they are able to continue strengthening their strong subjects. Home education also allows certain subjects to be reduced, or eliminated altogether if the parent feels it is unnecessary, which leaves room for the child to progress academically in subjects they like. This intellectual curiosity of the student enables them to work to their best ability resulting in
a successful future is improbable. Thus, the choice between sending children to a public school verses homeschooling is one that should not be made lightly. The popularity of homeschooling is growing, it is estimated that there are 1.73 to 2.35 million home educated students in the United States (Ray). Why is homeschooling the better option? Educating children at home has many distinct advantages: environment, academic performance, cost, strong ties between family members and social aspects. Another
Homeschooling: Academics, Socialization and College Admissions Prospects Homeschooling is probably one of the least known and least understood issues in education. Many people tend to think that most homeschoolers are religious conservatives or extremists. However, the truth is that people from all walks of life are joining the homeschooling bandwagon (Ray, 2004). The main misconception is that homeschooled children don’t get the same academic and social education as traditionally schooled children. Contrary
Traditional schooling’s credibility and effectiveness have lowered since homeschooling has emerged. Homeschooling is superior to traditional schooling because of a more productive work environment, positive socialization opportunities, and exceptional academic achievement. Homeschooling offers students a productive learning environment by allowing the instructor to tailor to the individual learning styles of the student. Linguistic, kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and mathematical are some
Additionally, Arai (1999, p.5) argues that these schools also lack interest in the homeschooled students seeking admission because they have negative attitudes towards these homeschoolers since they believe they do not have the required qualifications to pursue formal education. The institutions lack the confidence that parent’s educators can instill the required knowledge and qualifications in the homeschooled students through the informal
Homeschooled children have the same, if not more, socialization skills than children that go to public schools. Some public schooled children might think that because homeschooled children do not go to a public school that they do not have friends or the social skills that come with going to a public school with their peers. I grew up in the public schools so before doing research I believed that home schooled children did not have the same amount of social skills as public and private schooled children
schooling, parents often assume public school is the only option because it is the biggest branch of childhood education. Society has people convinced that the school house is the only proper place to learn, but this idea is not actually true because children vary in so many ways. Their bodies, minds, emotions and spirits combine to make unique individuals, and this mix affects the kind of environment in which each child learns best. According to the policies of the VHSL, or Virginia High School League, homeschool students are not permitted to participate in the athletic teams in public schools (Advocating for Homeschooled Children). Schools produce sub-par academic products, Isabel Lyman indicates in her article “What’s Behind the Growth in Homeschooling?”, and they are hatcheries of crime. Teachers are faced with kindergarten students who do not know their addresses, colors, and sometimes even first and last names (An ‘F’ 59). Another reason why the assignment of failing grades has decreased is the influence of the self-esteem movement, which promotes the assumption that children who do not have a positive self-image cannot learn or develop properly. Schools across North America at present can be situated on a continuum extending between the limits of completely progressive and completely traditional – or, more accurately, on a continuum reflecting the various components of each model (Kohn, 2008). For many generations, the traditional educational model was and continues to be widely accepted and practiced (Wile, n.d). Teachers who practice this approach to teaching are concerned with transmitting a body of factual and cultural knowledge to students
