Academic Dishonesty
In today’s age, it seems like academic dishonesty is becoming a prominent structure in our educational system. No one can deny that it is detrimental to our education and to our moral values, but somehow, almost everyone has committed some form of cheating in their lives. Since cheating is so rampant in schools and colleges, it is apparent that something must be done to stop the degradation of higher institutions. When I read Professor Doom’s blog, “Save Higher Education: Toss the Cheaters,” I gained a new insight on how cheating affects colleges today. I agree with most of Professor Doom’s opinions and believe that higher education is predestined for failure unless the declaration, “This institution does not tolerate cheating,” …show more content…

The statement that being expelled from one institution isn’t a life-destroying event is incorrect. If one gets caught cheating on an exam and it goes on their permanent record, other schools will have predetermined notion that the person is dishonest and will most likely have a hard time allowing that student to enroll in their universities. I am in no way saying that expulsion shouldn’t be used in certain situations, but I think that expulsion is a very harsh punishment and should only be utilized in extreme circumstances. It is imperative to emphasize with students and realize that they have a lot of pressure on their shoulders and stress will lead them to do stupid things, such as cheat. Stress shouldn’t be an excuse, but students should get punished by suspension, receiving an F on that assignment, or failing that course: not expulsion.
I also don’t agree with Professor Doom’s statement that the knowledge of online courses will soon be identical to courses taught at tradition colleges. In fact, I think online courses would make it easier to cheat on tests and assignments. In this technological world, all one has to do is copy and paste a question into a search engine and the answer will instantly appear. While cost effective, online schools are not identical to the valuable knowledge that is offered at traditional schools. Traditional schools are fast paced, unlike online schools, so they will better prepare a student for the
