The absence of a career goal is an obstacle to one’s success. Yogi Berra once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.” (Brainy Quotes, 2013). To move our careers forward, we need to think strategically. Today’s market place requires that we be both proactive and intentional in order to circumnavigate the workplace, make good logical decisions, and consistently assess opportunities for our academic, personal and career goals.
It is also important to know what you are aiming for, by first setting yourself a target and a time frame, as I believe, the secret ingredient to success is to own one’s own ambitions and actions and then make the decisions necessary to get there.
I have developed and applied a number of strategies in this class, especially when it comes to establishing goals and developing academic perseverance and survival. First, by identifying how one learns best (through Kolb’s learning style model and Gardner’s multiple intelligence concepts) whether it is visual, auditory, or tactile, can be paramount in one’s educational success. I have also discovered that each learning style is unique to one’s own self and is equally important to building a personal foundation by exploring one’s own personality traits, interpersonal skills, leadership capabilities interests, values, effective time management, identifying strengths and skills, utilizing professional communication, understanding the importance of networking, setting goals, and executing tasks. It is also essential to become actively involved, such as asking pertinent questions in class, forming discussion groups with your class peers, and developing a rapport with your instructor. As I expand my knowledge in the different counseling approaches, my values appropriately fit in with the humanistic theoretical orientation. The career theory Integrative Life Planning (ILP) also resonates in my future ambitions as a counselor. I am very interested in working with high school and/or college students and helping them successfully prepare for their future. The holistic approach has stood out to me from the start of the program and has been useful in my personal life. My goal is to help the student/client to be able to discover their own personal motivations and self-satisfaction within them, as well as a way to benefit society. My role as a counselor is to assist the student in organizing their personal skills, work values, and career interests as a start to finding an ideal work environment. With some guidance, this will empower the student to appreciate that they have options to do what they truly enjoy. I have known many students that do not have guidance in creating a successful future. Accord to the Gates Foundation study, only 7 of 10 U.S. students are graduating within the four years they are in high school (Corbett, G. A. & Huebner, T. A.. 2007). These students do not have reason to be motivated in discovering their ambitions. The quote that inspired me in my career journey is, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life,” by Confucius.

Many of the choices made by young adults regarding career are made regarding their areas of expertise or passion. As I reflect on the academic experience and continue my career endeavors I found that establishing, evaluating, and fulfilling set goals are vital key to success. According to Fallon & McConnell (2014), “a certain amount of forward progress is necessary simply to remain abreast of change.” My thinking has been tremendously influenced by education and experience as I continue my journey and exhibit growth and understanding. The healthcare field and all professions within is one of the fastest and most aggressively growing career path. Just as people will always need someone to fix anything they will also always need doctor medical staff. The doctors, nurses, and medical assistants are on the front lines interacting with and caring for and healing the patients that are in such dire need for their help but behind the scenes sitting at a desk shifting and sorting through mounds of paperwork or sitting through endless boring board meetings with suits who have no idea how patient care really works that’s where I want to be this is the nerd that I am. I will gladly take mounds and mounds of paperwork and
The key to remember is if you want something badly, you will work for it diligently. No failure will stop you, no obstacle will block you, no excuse will prevent you from getting the result you desire.

Many high school juniors, seniors, and even some college freshmen do not know what they want to do with their lives, but I have known since I was nine years old. From an early age, I decided I wanted to become a computer software engineer, and seven years later I still have the same goal. I still have a copy of a letter that I wrote to Google in elementary school asking them how I could eventually work at their company; although it embarresses me that I did this, it is a good reminder for me of how lucky I am to have found a passion at a young age. Besides my career, I feel as though I have always had a clear view of how I want my future to turn out. However, as I get older, the specific details of my “perfect future” have become less important

There are several ways in which a teacher can accommodate every learning style by doing simple things in the classroom. Examples of this would be a certain seating arrangement or even just changing all the time to reach each students style. There can be no success without goals or targets. This is because success is relative to a set target and whether we have achieved it, or at least making steady progress towards attaining it. For you to succeed, set a goal, a measurable target that represents what you envision: that is what you want or where you see yourself in future. A goal should be measurable so as to enable you to monitor your progress and help you know whether you are on track or you have gone off.
