In the 19th century, two revolutionaries who shaped the world’s way of thinking were born on the same exact day and year, Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin. These two meticulous, well-spoken leaders made advancements that no other man had ever succeeded in their fields, one in politics, and the other in biological sciences. Besides their identical birthday, they also shared many traits and writing styles. This was basically a required attribute for a president at this time as America was experiencing many rough changes and uprisings. In early life, Lincoln was very flexible in choosing a career choice and kept his education options open throughout life. His strong leadership style allowed for easy debate through his career in politics and his outgoing personality was very likable. Lincoln possessed copious amounts of wisdom and kindness which appealed to many voters as these qualities shined through his speeches and debates. Within his first year of being president, the USA had little organization that could be suited for vast war operations as the American Civil War began. A large threat of other countries joining in on the war pressurized Lincoln to respond fast and efficiently. He developed very strategic thinking, despite his lack of knowledge and experience with war promptly. Lincoln was faced with the greatest threats to federal authority in the history of the United States, and, in the end won the war for his side, keeping America together. On the contrary, Darwin was not a social, easily connectable person, as most of his friendships were conducted through the mail and he seldom left his home. Charles Darwin did indeed change the ideas flowing through biological science in terms of evolution and creation, but many other ideas quite similar had already begun to surface in the field. According to Kearns Goodwin, Lincoln was considered a self taught man. Everywhere Lincoln went he had a book with him. Lincoln learned trades of boatman, clerk, merchant, postmaster, surveyor and country lawyer all by reading books and newspapers. Lincoln would read and re-read law books until her fully understood them. Lincoln wrote to a student seeking advice from him, “Life was a school to him and he was always studying and mastering every subject before him.” Lincoln also stated “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.” This right here shows how Lincoln had a herculean feat of self-creation and how he had a thirst for Technical and Tactful Knowledge.

Abraham Lincoln is perhaps one of the most interesting characters to have ever graced the American political arena and presidency. He is most noteworthy, obviously, for his role in saving the United States from its own destruction and the eradication of the vile Southern tradition of slavery. However, upon deeper inspection, one finds there was much more to Lincoln than his political achievements. Throughout his years as a politician, there's a noticeable shift in terms of his character, and political persona. He seems to go from ambitious and boisterous to being more solemn and reserved. Also, it should be noted that some remark that Lincoln was, quite ironically, both America’s most democratic and autocratic President to have ever held office. However, it seems that though there is abundant evidence for his democratic values, there are little to suggest his autocratic intentions. As though some lines revealing such intent can be found, many are also directly rebutted by powerful democratic rhetoric. All of this can be found in Lincoln’s four main speeches; “A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand”, his Inaugural Addresses and the Gettysburg Address. Basically, in order to properly analyze Lincoln it may be best to look at Lincoln’s personal and political changes within the terms of his antebellum and Civil War “personalities”, as well as to examine his democratic and autocratic leanings; all through scrutinizing Lincoln’s major speeches.

I feel that Lincoln might have lead this country through one of the deepest politic crisis. People in the south looked down upon Lincoln, can you only imagine what that feels like to have people, the very people you are sworn to take an oath to protect and to show guidance to them? Then on top of that there being a war fought and you being one of the main contributing factors to why this civil war is being fought in your country. Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist who was born in Shrewsbury, England on February 12, 1809. He was the second youngest of six children. Before Charles Darwin, there were many scientists throughout his family. His father, Dr. Robert Darwin, was a medical doctor, and his grandfather, Dr. Erasmus Darwin, was a well-known botanist. Darwin’s mother, Susannah Darwin, died when he was only eight years old. Darwin was a child that came from wealth and privilege and who loved to explore nature. In October 1825 at age sixteen, Darwin enrolled at Edinburgh University with his brother Erasmus. Two years later, Charles became a student at Christ’s College in Cambridge. His father wanted him to become a medical doctor, as he was, but since the sight of blood made Darwin nauseous, he refused. His father also proposed that he become a priest, but since Charles was far more interested in natural history, he had other ideas in mind (Dao, 2009)

During the Civil War, many soldiers died and there were many ups and downs. Lincoln established lasting connections with the troops by visiting the battlefield and hospitals, which also helped to boost everyone’s spirits. Lincoln wasn't scared to stand up and fight for what he knew was right. He was convinced that within the branches of government, the presidency alone was empowered not only to uphold the Constitution, but also to protect, and defend it. Lincoln was able to lead our country and preserve the Union, keeping the United States from splintering during the devastating times of the Civil War. As President, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization, and he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that changed the war into a battle for freedom and declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. That November, Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address, which stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. He dedicated the battlefield to the soldiers who had perished, and called on the living to finish the task the dead soldiers had begun. (Donald, 1995) Lincoln believed that democracy could be a lasting form of government. He showed a nobility of character that had worldwide appeal, and he was a man of great integrity. However, Lincoln was not only the 16th president of the United States, he was an American hero. Lincoln was a well-rounded individual and he had numerous outstanding qualities. However, it is important to remember that Lincoln also led a private life, complete with close friends and family.
The impact these men had on religious thought was tremendous. Some of them are the starting points for many of the controversies existing today. Of all the scientists, historians, and philosophers in the nineteenth century, the most influential and controversial was Charles Darwin. Born in 1809, Charles Darwin always had an interest in the nature, so he chose to study botany in college. His strengths in botany led him to become the naturalist on the H.M.S. Beagle. On a trip to South America, he and the rest of the crew visited the near by Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It was there he noticed many different variations of the same general plants and birdshe saw previously in South America. He also observed ancient fossils of extinct organisms that closely resembled modern organisms. By 1859, all of these observations inspired him to write down his theories. He wanted to explain how evolution had occurred through a process called natural selection. In his published work, On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life, or On the Origin of Species for short, Darwin stated that, "new species have come on the stage slowly and at successive intervals."(1) He also said, "old forms are supplanted by new and improved forms," and all organisms play a part in the "struggle for life.
