Abortion: Saving or Ending Lives? Many people are familiar with the term abortion and its popular controversy in society today. Anyone who is familiar with the term should also be familiar with the two groups that form the controversy of abortion: pro-life and pro-choice. The article I chose is written by Terry O’Neill and is titled, “Legal Abortion Can Be a Lifeline”. The article was published on January 22, 2013, to U.S. News. It argues that abortion saves lives rather than taking them. O’Neill’s claim “abortion is a lifeline” rests upon the questionable assumption that a baby inside a womb is not considered life. She is a feminist attorney, professor, activist for social justice, and President of the National Organization for Women (Carolyn Szczepanski, Screen 1). I believe that is very clear that O’Neill is passionate about legal abortion and that is was what motivated her to write this and other similar articles. O’Neill’s purpose for writing this article was to give her perspective on abortion to others and give them reasons to why she believes this. Her argument first appeared on U.S. News on January 22, 2013, in response to another author’s article, “Should Abortion Be Illegal?” Since then she has written articles such as, “Access to Health Care and Birth Control Is a Civil Right” and has been active in the National Organization for Women. The controversy of abortion is something very popular in society today. With this article focusing on this controversy, this article targets anyone who knows the controversy of abortion, which is the majority of society. However, the main target is those who are pro-life. As I have said many times, abortion is a very popular and controversial topic in today’s time and that affects her arguments in a positive way. It affects it in a positive way, simply because abortion is a topic that many people are interested in reading
