Women are prohibited from abortion in country X due to the existence of beliefs that promote inferiority of women. This remains a major problem because the society of country X doesn’t respect women’s political or civil rights that involve making decisions regarding their bodily integrity, which forces women to carry fetuses to term. In this paper, I will argue that we ought to reject Don Marquis’ notion of opposing abortion due to the presence of the fetus’s future of value because Marquis fails to properly account for the type of future that the female fetus would eventually have in a particular setting like country X where civil and political rights are extremely limited. Moreover, the right to life objection conveys that the fetus’s right to life is significant despite the absence of a future of value.
Don Marquis would oppose abortion of the healthy female fetus in country X because abortion is morally wrong except in rare circumstances (Warriner, 4). Marquis argues that fetuses have the right to life, regardless of their race, gender, religion, or age (Marquis, 187-188). Moreover, fetus’s right to life outweighs mother’s bodily integrity because the female fetus is deprived of her future of value when abortion is permitted (Marquis, 187-188). For example, the future of a standard fetus comprises “a set of experiences, projects, activities, and enjoyments” that are necessary to complete goals and maintain interests for a prosperous life (Warriner, 7). This also explains why dying from a premature death is seriously immoral and murder is one of the worst crimes because it causes a loss of future experiences (Warriner, 8). However, Marquis’ position is inequitable because there are circumstances in which a fetus doesn’t possess future of value regardless the occurrence of the abortion. For example, the life of the female fetus in country X doesn’t possess future of value since her goals and interests won’t be respected due to the deprivation of women’s civil rights. Therefore, abortion isn’t prima facie wrong because it doesn’t deprive the fetus of a future of value, but prevents the deprivation of a future of value because abortion protects the fetus from having a dreadful or lack of future in country X.
