The Pros And Cons Of Abortion

A single woman in her 20’s just found out she is pregnant. At first, she gets excited and fantasizes of all the things she wants to do with her baby. But then realizes that she isn’t ready; not financially, physically, emotionally or mentally. On top of that, she has school and work. Therefore, she calls her doctor to set up an appointment for other options. Come to find out, Michigan doesn’t allow insurances to cover abortion. Depending on which trimester you are in, abortion isn’t cheap. Michigan should allow insurance companies to cover abortion for every situation, not just rape or life endangerment. Now let me talk about the numbers. According to the New York Times editor, Kurt Eichenwald, he wrote, “Over half of the more than 40 facilities …show more content…

There was an article that discussed about abortion and stated, “The most common medical issue associated with abortion is infection, a potentially serious and life-threatening problem. Abortion can also cause excessive bleeding and damage to the uterus…” (“Abortion” 2014). I can understand why people might feel this way, however, abortions are done safely. Simon LeVay, a Ph.D. neuroscientist, Janice Baldwin, a Ph.D. sociologist and John Baldwin, a sex education teacher, wrote an article on abortion and stated, “Abortion is overall a very safe procedure. Females shouldn’t have to be raped or be in dangerous environments in order for them to have their abortion paid …show more content…

As much as I understand why people might feel that abortion is taking a life away, however, it’s not. LeVay and Baldwin specifically explained that, “The fetus is not yet a human being because it cannot survive outside the uterus on its own. Abortion should not be considered murder if the fetus is not self-sustaining and requires the mother’s body and physical resources to survive. The body of first priority is therefore the mother’s, and it should be her choice as to what she endures both mentally and physically”. This shows that abortion is nothing but a way to end pregnancy before a human life develops. On that note, isn’t it worse to have a female be forced to have a baby that she isn’t ready for and cause neglect/abuse to the baby? If not that, the baby won’t be growing up in a healthy environment. Children should be able to come into this world loved and wanted, not by force from the law. Anything by force rarely ends well. It all comes down to what the mother decides to do with her body because “she should be free to do what she deems necessary for her body and overall health in any situation” (LeVay and
