Abortion: A Difficult Decision

RU486 provides an almost immediate and early end to an unwanted pregnancy. However, such choices come with possible long term consequences. Consequences involve physical side effects as well as emotional and mental and possible spiritual repercussions. If such findings prove true, how does one overcome such life altering obstacles?

Abortion is the premature end of a pregnancy resulting from the exit of the products of conception from the uterus or the loss of a pregnancy with or without specified cause. Abortion without cause would be known as miscarriage. Abortion with cause occurs when there are intentional steps taken to terminate the pregnancy. An abortifacient is a chemical that causes an induced abortion. There are several abortifacients on the market. Mifeprisone or brand name Mifeprex and Misoprostol or brand name Cytotec are combined to form RU486 or the abortion pill. Methotrexate is usually used with Misoprostol. However, Misoprostol may also be used alone. The medications work to break down the placenta or lining of the uterus that sustains pregnancy and fetal growth, interferes with the cell growth and multiplication process and causes the cervix or opening of the uterus to soften resulting in fetal expulsion. The FDA indicates that RU486 can have side effects and complications such as hemorrhage, heavy and excessive bleeding, blood transfusions serious infections, and incomplete abortion. Incomplete abortion can be an issue for a woman who says she would choose a medical abortion, but not a surgical one.
