Abortion has been a controversial topic in the U.S ever since it became legal in 1973 after the Roe v. Wade case. Abortion is defined as the, “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” Pro-life supporters believe that abortion is unethical and argue that it is the mother’s responsibility to own up to her actions. They also argue that there is always the option of adoption, and that abortion could be very dangerous. I am pro-life and believe that the government doesn’t have the right to decide what a woman can or can’t do with her body. In 1973, Texas had a state law that banned abortion except when it was necessary to save the life of the mother. A woman named Norma McCorvey …show more content…
I would argue that giving birth isn 't always the most responsible option. If a woman knows that she won 't be able to effectively take care of the child I’d say it’s more responsible of her to have an abortion and prevent them both from having a future full of hardships. People also say that if a woman had practiced safe sex and used contraception than she could have avoided it all together. According to Newsweek, a report released by the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that, “fewer than half of high schools and only a fifth of middle schools teach lessons on all 16 of the nationally recommended topics for sexual health education.” They also found that, “schools were least likely to teach kids how to obtain or use condoms.” This shows that not everyone is informed on how to obtain or correctly use contraceptives, so avoiding a pregnancy might not always be an …show more content…
According to the Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System issued by the CDC, “the number of reported pregnancy-related deaths in the United States steadily increased from 7.2 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1987 to a high of 17.8 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2009 and 2011.” The CDC Abortion Surveillance System, found that the mortality rate for women who had abortions was 0.7 deaths per 100,000 procedures. This shows how safe legal abortions can be when done professionally. When the procedure is done by someone who is not a trained professional then it becomes detrimental to women. If abortion was illegal more of these procedures would occur and can possibly risk more lives. It’s better for it to be legal and safely done than illegal and done
Abortion is a very controversial and sensitive topic in today’s society. Two different sides to this argument is pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life proponents believe in the right to life for unborn fetuses saying that abortion should be considered murder regardless of how far along in the pregnancy the woman is. Pro-choice advocates people who believe the woman carrying the fetus should be able to make her own decision on aborting the fetus.
Pro-life vs. pro-choice can often be a complicated and confusing one. Those who are against abortion often believe life begins at conception and base their opinion on Biblical views. Those that are advocates of pro-choice believe it is a women’s right to end a pregnancy regardless of the woman‘s reasons. In the United States, the pro-choice view is perceived as pro-abortion, and the pro-life position is recognized as anti-abortion. Should women have the right to choose to have an abortion in today’s society?
On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court, made decisions of Roe vs. Wade and declared all state abortion statutes to be morally wrong. The majority of the Court first found that Jane Roe, had challenged the Texas abortion statute, even though she already had given birth. The Court then later found that women and doctors had a right to privacy and it interfered with meaningful state regulation of abortion. The majority saw this and studied this for the history of abortion and ...
Today, an abortion is done by a professional in the field that has had the specialized training to carry out the procedure. Before abortion became legal and easily accessible to women, many women were using back-alley or self induced abortions to get rid of unwanted pregnancies. The result of these unsafe procedures can be very devastating for both the women and the baby. Back in the early to mid 1900’s, wealthy women requiring an abortion because of severe medical reasons were generally able to find a physician who could perform an abortion. However, the poor women had to turn towards illegal and unsafe abortions, which ended in countless deaths and mutilations. Between the years of the 1950s to 1960s, it has been estimated that there were around 200,000 to 1,200,000 illegal abortions performed each year in the United States. Up to about 5,000 of these abortions ended with the death of the women having the procedure done. Because of abortion now being legal and accessible to all women in the United States, the death rate from getting one is extremely low, about 0.6 per 100,000 abortion procedures. Having a safe, legal, and effective place and way to get an abortion has overall been safer for the women getting an
In 1965, all fifty states in the United States banned abortion; however, that was only the beginning of the controversy that still rages today (Lewis 1). After abortion was officially banned in the United States, groups such as the National Abortion Rights Action League worked hard on a plan to once again legalize abortion in the United States (Lewis 1). It wasn’t until 1970 when the case of Roe (for abortion) v. Wade (against abortion) was brought to the Supreme Court (Lewis 2).... ... middle of paper ...
Abortion has been one of the biggest controversies of all time. Many people believe it is immoral and even consider it to be murder. The definition of abortion is; “The termination of pregnancy by the removal or expulsion from the uterus of a fetus or embryo prior to being capable of normal growth.” 1 These pro-life believers do not support the idea of induced abortion and believe it should be illegal. Many of these supporters do not know that if abortion were illegal they would still be performed, unfortunately by an uneducated staffs. Over 70 thousand maternal deaths occur every year because of unsafe abortions1. These women die, so the idea of supporting pro-life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro-choice.
How would you feel if someone took away your ability to live? How would you feel if you were never given the chance to come into the world and contribute to the human race? These are some of the questions an individual needs to ask when considering having abortion. Abortion, in my opinion, is immoral and unjust simply because it is murder. A brutal murder of a being who has not even seen the world and a huge injustice to a helpless fetus who might have been the next Einstein, President, or the person who would find a cure to cancer. Morality says that every person has the right not to be unjustly killed. Hence, this right also apply to any unborn child. The thought of an individual killing his/her own unborn child is always lurking in the back of my mind because it’s hard to assert the harm being caused by the unborn child to the mother or to the society in general. If we say abortion is morally right, then we are against procreation and procreation is one of the major contributions of a human being to his or her society and the world at large. The act of procreation is one of the most beautiful things in the world. To make a human being, being able to watch that kid grow into an adult and actually be responsible to the society, should be a very fulfilling experience for any mother. I hereby oppose the principle of paternalism because I don’t believe it is moral to take away or destroy the life of an unborn child to save the life of the mother because there is no harm caused by the unborn child but I support the harm principle because abortion in general, causes harm to the unborn child, his future, the mother and the society. Therefore, I subscribe to Don Marquis view on Abortion in his article “Why abortion is immoral”.
How would you feel if someone took away your ability to live, or not being able to have a say in whether or not you want to have a life? As a small innocent baby, in the mother’s womb, you have no choice. Thousands of babies have their life and future demolished due to abortion. Generally, abortion is such a sensitive topic, most people try not to think or even speak about it. However, abortion has been a common practice around the world at every point of history, and every society regardless of its legality. Even today, abortion is a huge controversial issue concerning woman and whether or not it should be legal. Many feel that aborting an unwanted child or more so killing an unwanted child is unlawful. Controversially, others believe a mother should have the choice to “protect” her body.
Today, abortion has become one of the greatest controversies throughout the world. The debate on whether or not abortion should become a legal option continues to dismember not only Americans, but citizens of other countries. There are people who believe abortion is a women’s civil right, and those who consider it as an immoral act. There are those who believe personhood begins at birth, and those who believe personhood begins from the moment of conception. Many contradictory statements lead to the separation of two groups: pro-choice and pro-life. While a pro-choice supports a women’s “right to privacy”, pro-life supporters are against such an action considering it murder, but why force a female to go through such a dramatic change because of a pregnancy?
Fifteen year old, Norma McCorvey who was the plaintiff known as Jane Roe (Napikoski, n.d.) was a single pregnant woman who challenged five articles of the Texas Penal Code; Articles 1191, 1192, 1193, 1194 as well as 1196 (POLS210, n.d.). The Articles prevented her from getting an abortion which she wanted at the time without income or funds to access one. She represented all women who were in the same situation and that because she was not endangered by her pregnancy; according to Texas Statutes it was a criminal abortion. According to Case Briefs (n.d.), with the help of her lawyers, Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee she believed that the Texas Statutes were wrongfully unclear and with the Fourth, Fifth, Ninth and Fourteenth Amendments that protected her, that they reduced her right of personal privacy.
Abortion is one of the most controversial topic in the United States at the moment. Abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a pregnancy, usually before the embryo or fetus is capable of independent life. Pro-life supporters believe that abortion is murder and No one should be able to decide whether who lives or dies. While pro- choice supporters believe that a woman has the choice on whether she want to give birth or not .If a woman is rape; a pro-life supporter believes that abortion is wrong with no exceptions including rape or if the mother’s life is endangered: the child’s right to life outweighs the mother’s right to her body. How can we claim to be the land of freedom, yet our government is constantly restricting abortions laws throughout the United States. Woman should have the freedom to have an abortion without the government interference.
Some people view it as murder while others see it as an alternate way of birth control. A popular debate in today’s society concerns whether abortion is the termination of the life of a fetus, or rather a way to terminate a pregnancy. Abortion is a voluntary medical procedure in which the embryo or fetus is removed from the uterus to terminate a pregnancy. The thought of abortion has gotten very popular among young adults over the last few decades and have caused many different opinions to rise, this seems to be caused by the evolution of technology in science making abortion cheaper and much safer. However, in the 1800s this was not the case, abortion was banned in Canada, as a result, illegal operations were popular, and in some cases death
In America, abortion has become a more prevalent topic debated in the media and in court. This controversial issue has two distinct sides, pro-life and pro-choice. Pro-life supporters believe that abortion is wrong, while pro-choice supporters disagree. The right to get an abortion is one the women of America deserve to have.
Those who adamantly oppose abortion are regarded as pro-life and those who are supporters of abortion are considered pro-choice by contemporary standards. Even among those who advocate abortion, there are discrepancies in their views such as up until what point in the pregnancy is abortion morally permissible. In my opinion, abortion is morally permissible at any stage in a woman’s pregnancy. This is ethically acceptable because a woman should have the right to control what goes on within her body. Along with this, fetuses are still far from personhood (having the qualities of a human being); therefore, we cannot liken abortion to any variety of murderous activity.
Women should have the right to decide whether or not they would like to have an abortion. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines abortion as; “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.” The idea of a woman’s right to have an abortion being taken away is merely incomprehensible.
