Abnormal psychology is the branch psychology that deals with the study of abnormal behavior in an attempt to describe, predict, and explain in order to change behaviors. There are four criteria used in the determination of what is considered to be abnormal they are deviance, distress, dysfunction, and danger (Comer, 2012). Though deviance is hard to pinpoint as it is defined by an individual’s culture and society. The different ways in which to approach treatment for individuals.
Biological Model
The biological model often referred to as the medical model depicts abnormality as an illness brought on by the malfunctioning parts organisms. For instance, problems are in the brain anatomy or brain chemistry are seen as the cause of the abnormal behavior. The brain is composed of approximately a hundred thousand neurons, then splits forming large groups to form the brain regions. In turn, brain regions control the important functions such as part of the hippocampus which regulates emotions and memory. Researchers acquired that psychological disorders could be related to the corruption of transmission of messages between neurons. Biological researchers also see abnormalities could be cause by a gene mutation or inherited mutation such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (Comer, 2012).
Treatments in this model include the use of drug therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, or neurosurgery. There are four major drug groups: antianxiety which are minor tranquilizers that reduce tension and anxiety, antidepressant, anti-bipolar mood stabilizers for bipolar patients, and antipsychotic which help reduce hallucinations and delusions. As the models listed above the best form of therapy is the one that will help a patient and what is needed from them to address and improve their problems. There are a variety of the models that could be mixed at match, such as cognitive behavioral therapy as it combines behavioral modification and traditional cognitive process. The best way to help a patient is to see what they need in the form of treatments would be the most beneficial to them.
