She said to the girls “Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you”. (Miller 20) Abigail only wanted one thing she could not have which was a married man. When in court John begins to reveal his affair with Abigail. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail William’s flaws – mendacity, lust, and arrogance – that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch hunt in Salem, Massachusetts. Driven by lust, Abigail was able to lie to the Salem community in hopes of covering her and her friends’ deeds and gaining the attention of John Proctor. Her arrogance enabled her t0 advance her deceit.
To demonstrate, Abigail is a murderer. She was the cause for nineteen innocent people to be put to their death. John Proctor says, “I believe she means to murder” (Miller,1201). Proctor states this when Abigail accuses John’s wife, Elizabeth of doing witchcraft upon her using a poppet to cause harm. Elizabeth is Abigail’s enemy because she wants John Proctor all for herself. Abigail thinks that with getting his wife out of the picture she may be able to keep him all to her own, feeling the need to punish her by murdering Elizabeth as she seeks for revenge due to death.
She does everything that is physically possible to get rid of her. She drinks a charm to kill Elizabeth, she stabs herself with a needle to accuse Elizabeth of a crime, Abigail also accuses Elizabeth of being a witch. The whole play, those were the only intentions that Abigail had, exterminate Elizabeth Proctor. Even though John decided to attempt to make the court look differently at Abigail and see what she has done to many people in the city of Salem. The misleading trait that Abigail has, helps her get out of a rocky situation without harm. The threatening of the girls, drinking a charm, stabbing herself with a needle, and accusing Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft are all the reasons that Abigail is also an evil individual. Abigail was the most misleading and evil character in the play written by Arthur Miller.
First, In the book The Crucible Abigail Williams is the vengeful, manipulative, and a liar. She seems to be uniquely gifted at spreading death and destruction wherever she goes. She has a sense of how to manipulate others and gain control over them. All these things add up to make her one good antagonist with a dark side. In Act I, her skills at manipulation are on full display. When she's on the brink of getting busted for witchcraft, she skillfully manages to pin the whole thing on Tituba and several of Salems other second class citizens. Also since Abigail's affair with John Proctor, she's been out to get Elizabeth, his wife. She convinced Tituba to put a curse on Elizabeth, hoping to get rid of her and take
In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, the main character Abigail Williams is to blame for the 1692 witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Abigail is a mean and vindictive person who always wants her way, no matter who she hurts. Through out the play her accusations and lies cause many people pain and suffering, but she seemed to never care for any of them except John Proctor, whom she had an affair with seven months prior to the beginning of the play. John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth used to employ Abigail, until Elizabeth found out the affair and threw Abigail out. Although John told Abigail that the affair was over and he would never touch her again, she tried desperately to rekindle their romance. "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again." (Page 23) She claimed that she loved John and that he loved her. Before the play began, Abigail tried to kill Elizabeth with a curse. She thought that if Elizabeth were dead John would marry her. Further into the play, Abigail accused Elizabeth of witchcraft. She saw Marry Warren, the Proctor's servant, making a poppet. Mary put a needle into the doll, and Abigail used that for her accusation. She stabbed herself with a needle and claimed that Elizabeth's soul had done it. Although Abigail claimed she loved John, she may have just loved the care and attention he gave her. John cared for her like no one else had. In a way he could be described as somewhat of a father figure to her. When Abigail was just a child, she witnessed her parents' brutal murders. "I saw Indians smash my dear parent's heads on the pillow next to mine..." (page 20) After her traumatic experience, she was raised by her uncle, Reverend Parris, who is somewhat of a villain. In the play it was written, "He (Parris) was a widower with no interest in children, or talent with them." (Page 3) Parris regarded children as young adults who should be "thankful for being permitted to walk straight, eyes slightly lowered, arms at the sides, and mouths shut until bidden to speak." (Page 4) Therefore, it is obvious to see that Abigail grew up without any love or nurturing.
The Crucible consists of many characters and most of them have a very descriptive personality. There are many villains in the play that only bring suffering to others. The biggest villain is Abigail Williams. She is Reverend Parris’s seventeen year old niece. Of the major characters she is clearly the main villain of the play. All throughout the book, Abigail is seen telling lies and manipulating her friends to get her own way. Her lies and manipulations get to a point where she gets nineteen people sent to their deaths. Her motivations never seem more complex than simply loving Proctor and getting rid of Elizabeth. The book is basically driven on Abigail trying to hide their relationship. The book begins in Rev. Parris’s home where his daughter
Throughout the entire play, Abigail is angry at John for not loving her back after the affair which preceded the play. Abigail is speaking to John, and she claims that he is still in love with her. As John rejects this idea, Abigail stills desires love from John. In Act I, Abigail says,“It’s she that put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you do now (Miller I).” She is using her words to manipulate John into loving her. Later in the play, she accuses John’s wife of witchcraft to get back at John. This backfires on her when John dies at the end of the play. Abigail quickly becomes an adversary of John after she harasses his family and his life. Abigail shows her anger towards John Proctor by accusing his wife and eventually hanging
Abigail accuses innocent people of witchcraft, including John’s wife, Elizabeth. She does this so her and John would be together and Elizabeth wouldn’t be in his life, even after John told Abigail he does not love her. He faces this crucible throughout the play and changes his demeanor towards Abigail. John becomes infuriated and he wants to expose Abigail for making false accusations of witchcraft, although it might include his confession of adultery. John eventually confesses his sin of adultery but refuses for it to be made public and posted on the church door, resulting in his
Abigail Williams the main character in The Crucible by Arthur Miller draws the interest of the reader as she is a wicked, confident girl who lies to get what she wants and defends her name and her life.
I believe that Abigail Williams is to blame for turning the town of Salem against many people, and I think it is her fault that several people were killed. Abigail Williams sends the town into a state of hysteria by accusing men and women of practicing the satanic art of witchcraft. Abigail’s flaws - her lustful desire for John Proctor, her deceptive habit of lying in order to retain her good name in the town, and her selfishness and obsessive aspiration for power – led her to be ultimately responsible for the catastrophe of the witch hunt in Salem.
Abigail worked for John and his wife before she was fired by the wife of John. Reverend Parris was concerned as of why she was fired by the Proctors. Abigail lied to her Uncle hiding the truth, saying she only displeased them, but she was seduced by John while his wife was sick. After the wife found out she fired Abigail. After everything that has happened Abigail thought John Proctor still had feeling for her, but he denied that he still had these feelings for her. Abigail sought revenge on John. She stuck a needle into her stomach to try to get his wife hanged for witchcraft. That solution quickly turned around when the wife came out that she was pregnant.
ou should never lie to others, consequently, that one lie can cause an even bigger lie with additional problems. In The Crucible Abigail is a compulsive liar who has a two-faced personality, she is also obsessed with the idea of being with an older man. This event takes place in Salem in the year of 1692. Abigail is a teenage girl who accuses people in Salem of performing witchcraft, her anger and desperation began to grow when John Proctor told her that he did not want to be with her. Abigail is responsible for all of the predicaments in Salem. Her lying has put citizens in grave danger, moreover their lives in jeopardy.
Abigail and Elizabeth both love John Proctor. Abigail worked as a servant at the Proctor home, and during that time she had an affair with John. Abigail feels that is Elizabeth were out of the way she could have John all to herself, and that is why she’s jealous of Elizabeth, John’s wife. When Elizabeth is asked why she dismissed Abigail, she won’t say anything about the affair Abigail had with her husband.
Abigail was seen as a purge the Puritan, always helping out the church, and to the court ,but she was far from perfect. This is a story best summarized by the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Early in the story the Abigail Williams, the antagonist, in the story, has an affair with John Proctor, the protagonist. After a John and Abigail have an affair John denies all accusations of it happening which sends Abigail into a rage and forces her to do unspeakable things for their time and place. Abigail later lies about people of performing witchcraft like deeds which sends them to trial and some sent to death. Arthur Miller uses Abigail an example of a Puritan who does not meet the standards of the Puritan religion.
The true antagonist of the play is the town of Salem itself, because of the judgemental and self concerned peoples, and its oppressive views. Abigail;s outrageous actions are due to her desensitized views on death and actions otherwise viewed as unethical. From her youth ABigail recalls: “ I saw indians smash my dear parents’ head on the pillow next to mine and i have seen some reddish work at night” (Miller 20), because of this Abigail is numb to death and suffering and is in fact quite morbid. There is no problem in condemning other to death in Abigail’s eyes because she doesn’t see the issue with it. Abigail does not seem to comprehend that it is unethical to let people be hanged and stoned to death and has no issue telling others that she “ can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down” (Miller 20). Not only is Abigail desensitized to murder and death, she is also numb to other unethical dilemmas. Abigail is desensitized to corrupting the Proctor’s marriage because of her childish lust and obsession for John Proctor. Such desires can be seen through her encounters with Proctor. In regards to their so called “relationship” she says: “it’s she put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you love me now!” (Miller 22). Abigail does not view her behavior t...
