A video game addiction is just like any other addiction. These addicts seek stimulus from their subjects and cannot refrain from it. It impedes on their daily lives, interrupts their way of logic, and has no real benefits. The major reason why addictions begin is because it helps them cope with their emotions. For them, it’s another world that is immersive and engaging to the point that they are entranced by it. Video games and the Internet provide a plethora of communities and people to meet. Since it is easier to remain anonymous on the Internet, there are opportunities to create alter egos. As harmless as it may sound, there are negative side effects that stem from their addiction. People suffering from depression have had their ways to cope with it. Whether it was drugs, alcohol, food, video games or etc; it is their way of coping. Unlike drugs and alcohol, video games are easier to obtain. They are usually on sale, many retail stores carry games, and most of them are now free on the internet. Video games are more lasting than the consumable coping mechanisms. Depending on what genre and size the game is, the playability of the game can range from a few to thousands of hours. This allows them to escape to another world where they can forget about reality. However, they could possibly do just as much harm than those drugs. On the internet, a person can become an alter ego and more. A computer monitor creates an invisible barrier that allows someone to do whatever they would want to on the internet. With the given opportunity to redefine their selves, impersonation or imaginative personas are born. While there are numerous reasons why this can occur, there is not much to prevent this. Businesses are now contracting the leading computer hardware companies to develop hardware for their products so more advanced games can be created and sold via application stores. At the same time, mobile video gaming already exists. Laptops are slowly becoming just as powerful as desktops are. Portable game consoles like have been around for more than a decade and does not require internet connection to play. Despite being everywhere, it’s surprisingly not as hard to quit video gaming. For something that has taken the world by storm, video games aren’t as hard to give up. As mentioned before, there is a limit to how different video games can be. Like most hobbies, there is a point when it stops becoming interesting. For the typical human being, the repetition of doing the same things over again becomes boring for us.
Video games have completely changed childhoods of many children across the globe. A video game involves visual feedback from a TV or computer monitor. Ever since the 1970s, video games have continuously improved by improving the graphics and sound. During the 1970s, there were many arcade games that were not advanced compared to today’s games. By 2016, video games are produced in three-dimensional imaging and are incredibly realistic. For example, Madden 2016 is a football game based on all the athletes in the National Football League. Clinically, the manifestations occur along biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual dimensions (2)." While there is currently no category for video game addiction in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3), which is the manual utilized to diagnose psychological disorders, video game addicts are often described by clinicians in the field as displaying many symptoms characteristic of other addictions. These behaviors include failure to stop playing games, difficulties in work or school, telling lies to loved ones, decreased attention to personal hygiene, decreased attention to family and friends, and disturbances in the sleep cycle (4). Withdrawal symptoms can even include behaviors as severe as shaking (5).

They are not getting enough exercise, which can lead to obesity, diabetes, and other health related issues. Video games can be a positive aspect of adolescent or adult life, the key as in most things is moderation.
...eases the societal costs of this risk factor” (Source F). The “delayed gratification” further exacerbates the addiction by the satisfaction one feels after winning a game (Source D). This is harmful because students will continue to play these games until they have reached the ultimate gaming accomplishment: winning the entire game. Some students are unable to pause their games for even a few hours. Therefore, these students do not gain necessary and appropriate communication skills since their focus is primarily on their game. Video games, thus, lead to harmful, addictive behaviors.
For example, enemies tend to jump out and make spine chilling sounds when I least expect it and it makes the game thrilling and scary at the same time because I get the feeling someone is creeping up behind me. Once I get brought to that alternate reality, I get amazed to the point that I just wander around the game instead of completing the actual objective because of the bright and well detailed design of maps programmed into the game. People who are addictive tend to obsessively go on online and follow up one of their role models or to play videos to create different characters in the virtual world. One of the mains reasons of why people become addicted to the internet is so they can escape their realities. People, who usually had unfortunate childhoods, try their best to find a way to become distracted with their own life. If they are not happy with themselves, they play videos games to create characters online or they obsessively update themselves on others that they wish they could be. Another reason why people become obsessive because it is a way for them to meet others online that share the same interest. From personal experience, my father used to have an obsession playing “World of Warcraft.” If he had the choice to, he would not leave the house and would play until he had to go to sleep, rinse and repeat. In a military family, it was common for us to constantly move around and for my father it was difficult in finding friends. My father would mostly play the game to find others that had the same interests that would keep him company. If my father didn 't realize how badly the game had corrupted his lifestyle, the addiction may have became more
