“Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” (Robert Frost). For the past month my class mates and I have been finding ways to become energy efficient and putting that information towards creating our own energy efficient home. After being put into groups we began to plan out how we were going to create a home design and turn it into a real scale model. At the beginning of this project I wasn’t aware of the fact that we would actually be learning things that could one day help us buy a home. I believe that it is important for homes to be cost and energy efficient for the economy, to save money, and the environment.
The first thing I learned while working on this project was, my group was smart and if we worked together our ideas were endless. When starting the idea of our house my group and I knew exactly what we wanted at the end of the project. My group and I completed our home by using different steps. Step number one was deciding how many rooms we wanted, and how big we think that they should be. Next we entered that information through a website called floorplans.com, and we were given a number of floor plans that served our wants. From there we took the floor plan and began to make it real. My group and I used a 3D website to create our home and add our own designs and make it look like a home. The next step was to make the scale model of our home, using the dimensions from our floor plan we were able to scale down the house. The final step was adding the details to our scale model. We picked different colors and floor tiling that would help to keep the heat in the winter, and the cold in, in the summer.

...economy of or reduction in money, time, or another resource. This project has taught me some important factors of a home, also how to find and calculate different walls, floors, and even to convert a home into a ½ square model. Becoming energy efficient doesn’t have to be a chore, the simple and little ways that you can be energy efficient can still help to save money, the economy, and our environment. Although I found myself lost at times, I now know how important it is for homes to be cost and energy efficient.

It will discuss the different types of dwellings throughout recorded human history from the perspective of how art and culture influences building design. This will fulfill my own curiosity to understand the different influences on homebuilding and design over the years and how people have dealt with these changes.

... reduce natural gas consumption. Long-term I am committed to installing new energy efficient windows to truly reduce energy consumption. To help reduce the family’s water consumption we recently installed an energy efficient washing machine that uses over 60% less water than the previous model that was installed. As an additional means in which to help conserve water I will be installing a rain barrel in the summer to water our outdoor plants. While these actions might not seem significant, they can make a significant difference. According to Energy Star, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, if every home in America replaced just one incandescent light bulb with an Energy Star qualified CFL, in just one year it would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes. That would prevent the release of greenhouse gas emissions equal to that of about 800,000 cars.

Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objects of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimal waste, and create healthy, productive environments (“Sustainable Design”). Focusing primarily on the sustainable design principles, there are five, including: low-impact materials, energy efficiency, quality and durability, design for reuse and recycling, and renewability. As sustainability appears to become the necessary trend in architecture, the question concerning the cost versus outcome of “going green” really an investment or a waste of time and money comes to mind. With our research provided below, we believe the expenses may truly be with the investment in the end.

Working, we all hated it at one point in our life. Sadly, working is part of our lives whether we want it to or not. It approximately started in the 1800s. Women were not allowed to work, so they did little work around the house when able to. Also throughout the 20th Century, Americans have said that “ the DIY home improvement movement has through the years strengthened family ties” (“Do-It-Yourself Show Traces America's History of Home Improvements”). DIY home improvement is very hard work and requires full attention, so mistakes that could be made, won’t happen because the full focus is on the project. But we have a choice, either do it ourselves or pay and get someone else to do it. This is when DIY home improvement can be essential in

In the past, our ancestor uses bush materials and trees to build houses. They weave the walls with bamboos and built their roofs with woven leaves or hay. The shape and size of the house depends on the size of the family. If a family has many children, the house built must be big enough to fit everyone. However, globalization has introduced materials such as roofing irons and processed timbers for walls and floors. These materials attracted the people in my village. Some of the people build their houses with these materials because they want to be seen as the highly ranked person in the village so they will be respected in the community. One of the effects of introduced architectural designs is that people lose interest in the traditional material because it might get damaged by pests, unlike the modern materials, the timbers are made in a way that pest or insects cannot attack and damage them. People nowadays find modern methods of construction for building homes more quickly and
