Language and communication is one of the most important aspects of education, and everyday life. As future special education teachers we need to understand typical and atypical language development. As SPED teachers we need to know about the how best to help students whose first language is not English. We need to be able to talk to parents and guardians and encourage them to facilitate interactions between themselves, and their children. These interactions can have very positive impacts on language development.
There are many different types of language issues that a student with an exceptional learning need can face. Students can face speech sound disorders, language disorders, cognitive communication disorders, fluency disorders, voice disorders, and orofacial myofunctional disorder. A speech sound disorder is when a student has difficulty pronouncing sounds they have a problem saying sounds, syllables, and words. This makes it very difficult to learn how to read. A language disorder makes it very difficult for a student to understand what they hear as well as expressing themselves in words. The student often knows what they want to say, but they cannot say it. A cognitive communication disorder is where a student has difficulty with thinking skills including perception, memory, awareness, reasoning, judgment, intellect, and imagination.
Stuttering is the most common fluency disorder. It is the interruption of the flow of speech that may include hesitations repetitions, prolongations of sounds or words. A voice disorder affects the quality of a student’s voice and it can include hoarseness, nasal voice, and problems with volume of speech. ...misunderstanding among different cultures. Many different cultures use the gestures we use as American differently than how we use them. Our use of gestures can lead to misunderstandings because we may not know that the gesture was inappropriate to the others cultures. Another non-verbal communication that we often use is eye contact. In some cultures maintaining eye contact while talking is often interpreted as disrespectful. We as American children learned that when we talk to someone we are to look them in the eye. Touching someone hair will often lead to a misunderstanding to many different cultures especially for the Vietnamese. These cultures did not let anyone touch their hair and consider it a sign of disrespect. Some students will smile or nod before they begin to talk to the teacher. In some cultures it is a sign of disrespect to talk directly to an adult.
