Embrace Your Obstacles
As I was growing up, I had to face some difficult obstacles, one thing I would do to get through these difficult times was to read quotes of inspiration that could help motivate and inspire me to overcome challenges that stand in my way. I find a particular quote personally meaningful, “An obstacle is often a stepping stone.” by William Prescott. Whether it is communicated by a coach, teacher, or parent its significance cannot be overstated. I believe this quote is one of the most inspiring simply because everyone should be able to relate to it in some way. Life presents all of us with many obstacles at one time or another. It is how we deal with these obstacles that define our character and can contribute to success or failure. I have found this quote to be invaluable helping inspire me to overcome life 's road blocks.

I loved playing the game of basketball; I started playing when I was two years old. When I was twelve years old I learned I would require orthopedic surgery to remove an osteochondroma. I always told myself, “It’s not that big of a deal, just get through it.” Unfortunately I had to undergo several surgeries over the next twelve to eighteen months to fully control the problem. Foot surgery and rehabilitation is difficult due to the weight of the body and the demands the body puts on the feet. Recovery was slow and I missed several weeks of school and many social activities. I was not able to play basketball during this time and prior to the third surgery I had been out of basketball, not even touching a ball, for nine months. I think the hardest part of the ordeal was not being able to do the normal things we all take for granted like running, walking, jumping, going to the beach, or just hanging with friends. On the bright side, I did have an excuse to play a great deal of Xbox and avoid having to wear
Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
"Some do not realise the journey they are taking until they are faced with its obstacles."
... front of me since the road to success is far away. Facing unknown obstacles is like drowning in water because obstacles are weighted heavily and sometimes I can't lift it. I just have to use my strength and hopefully, I can raise it off me. I learned that sometimes it is better to have a little false hope than to have none. Perseverance doesn’t not come naturally to all people but eventually it will come because they will find it. It helps them find their inner self by going through obstacles so that they can be more of a life challenge. I believe that this can change a person who they are because it is something everyone needs to go through life.
The obstacles which we must face are not there to hinder our daily life. They are there to provide countless opportunities to obtain greater success. In order to be successful we must look at every obstacle as a new opportunity.
Starting my freshman year at County High School, I played basketball and loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t be conceited enough to say I was good, but God did bless me with the talent to play. My life revolved around the sport of basketball; some would say I slept, ate, and breathed every part of it. I spent all my time training and practicing to make myself a more dedicated athlete. This dedication not only helped me as a player, but also molded me into the person I am today. It somehow helped to prepare me for what defeat I would face with back surgery in the future.
At some point in life most people have allowed at least one challenge to defeat them, if not more. Then there are those people who view these challenges as simply that, a challenge. This was the theme throughout Kyle Maynard’s novel, No Excuses, I learned that it is how we go about conquering these challenges that defines us as people. Throughout his novel he notes things will not always come easily; therefore, it is up to us to dig deep and conquer our goals. By finding alternate routes and adjusting your mindset, we are able to achieve any goal we set our minds to. Because it is not the obstacle that holds us back but it is ourselves that keeps us from fulfilling our greatest
“Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”(Michael Jordan). Every once in awhile, people are faced with hardships, it’s just a matter of life. However, some of these people may not know how to deal with these obstacles that they are facing. Although the individuals in the selection faced a variety of different hardships, they all overcame these obsatcles by perservering and not giving up.
To start with, it is important to be able to overcome obstacles because it will help you achieve your goals in life. No matter what your dreams are, there are always going to be setbacks, those who are able to overcome them find the life they want; because even if it seems like everything is going your way, don’t count on it staying that way. Be prepared for whatever challenge is thrown at you next. Like Sylvester Stallone once said “Life ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. No one hits harder than life, but it ain’t how hard you can hit. It's how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done”.
In all parts of life there are periods of adversity that we must face, the real challenge however, is what and how we gain from conquering those trials. There have been many times that I have been faced with adversity, it has happened in all aspects of my life at one time or another. Whether it is dealing with the ups and downs of hockey or balancing the pressure that comes with an elite hockey schedule and high school, there are always obstacles. Some of these challenges can bring about positive effects that influence the path of one’s life. In one such experience of mine, the amount of adversity was not near as great as the positive out come that came from my experience.
Obstacles are something that we all face in our lives. Whether it’s something small or huge. But it’s when we overcome them that we realize that we came out stronger than ever.
Lessons can be learned from the littlest of experiences. Important life lessons can be taken from not only success, but also our greatest failures. Adversity can greatly alter our perspective and provide an individual with wisdom. The first time I was faced with adversity was when I broke my tibia and fibula. I was involved in sports and this was definitely a setback, to say the least. Moments after the accident, I realized that the months of recovery I would have to toil. I realized these future and upcoming months would require patience and I would undergo great amounts of drudgery.
The one thing that an athlete doesn’t want to hear is that they cannot play their favorite sport because of an injury they recently got. This actually happened to me when I injured my knee while lifting high amount of weight. After my lifting class I was walking perfectly and prepared to get through the rest of the day. Only an hour later I couldn’t walk with my right leg and had to limp through the rest of the day. Two hours after I was limping and trying not to cry from the sharp, acute sting in my right knee.
Throughout my life, I've had to work up to where I am today by overcoming my challenges. In elementary school, an incident that occurred in my academic and personal life that made me realise the importance of grit. With changing schools as well as missing school set me behind my peers. For fear of failing or falling too far behind caused me to try harder by using grit to catch up or surpass my peers. In other words, “The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.” written by Randy Pausch in The Last Lecture. Inspired by this quote about grit shows that even though there is a "brick wall" it is just there to tested that person's determination of achieving that goal. After discovering that it registered to me that there is
In my 17 years on this earth one theme has been consistent, Adversity. Things always have been harder for me, from receiving acceptance to getting fair opportunities. Now this word “adversity” can make or break most people and can take them to a point of giving up on their dreams. However, for me, adversity has been my biggest motivator. It has made me mentally stronger and a greater competitor. I will never forget the turning point in my life where my perspective changed and altered the way I go about doing things.
If you were to ask my friends what I love to do, my guess is that the majority of them would come up with this reply, "He loves to play sports". Sports are a big part of my life, and if I had to choose my favorite sport to play it would have to be basketball. I couldn't imagine going a week without being able to touch a basketball, and I thought I would never have to. But on one summer afternoon, that all changed when I broke my leg. It left me on crutches for two months, and not being able to play basketball all that summer. At first I thought it wouldn't be so bad, getting all the attention and sympathy from everyone. However, after one game I soon realized that I would do just about anything to get rid of those horrible crutches and get back on the court.
