Diabetes is a chronic disease that results in how the body utilizes insulin production or how the body makes use of the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar in the body which aids in glucose transportation into the cells in the body. Diabetes results when the pancreas does not correctly produce enough insulin or when they body does not effectively use the insulin it produces ("Diabetic Fact Sheet," n.d.). In some cases individuals do not produce insulin at all, while others produce a scant amount of insulin in which it is not used effectively. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body turn food into energy and energy reserves (regulates the blood sugar), which help the body to properly function. If the body does not use insulin sufficiently it becomes unbalanced (American Diabetes Association, 2011). Three indicators that are most common with diabetes are:
• Polyuria-when the body produces excessive urine related to the kidneys inability to reabsorb water.
• Polydipsia-excessive thirst
• Polyphagia- excessive hunger

Diabetes is a chronic disease affecting millions of people around the world, with an increasing number of diagnosed cases each year and many more undiagnosed cases. Prevention strategies and treatment guidelines are assisting to decrease the number of individuals being diagnosed with diabetes each year. Overall, simple lifestyle changes, such as eating a well- balanced diet and a moderate increase in physical activity could make the difference of being at risk of diabetes in the future with a lifelong fight against it complications.
